did anyone else catch this show last night? i haven't watched a new series in a while so i chose this one.

it wasn't too bad imho... they did a decent job of keeping the suspense going, trying to figure out what the hell was snacking on everyone. i never did figure out what the heck that thing was... but since it came from a cave which featured an abyss of unthinkable depths (looked pretty deep when the girl jumped across) - maybe it was a "hound from hell" or something.

i'll be watching next week too. oh yeah, and Gabrielle Union is fskcing SMOKIN'.

poor, pale imitation to the original.

From a review of the TV/movie pilot that started the series in the '70s:
Wise-cracking Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) is a rumpled news hound plucked from the fast-talking newspaper flicks of the 1940s and dropped into the swinging '70s. What makes the eccentric Kolchak even more unique, however, is his nose for the supernatural, a trait that leaves his editor (Simon Oakland) exasperated and the police less than amused. When he insists that a late-night Las Vegas serial killer (who leaves his victims drained of blood and sporting twin holes in the neck) is a modern-day vampire, he's practically run out of town by the local authorities. Naturally, he stalks the vampire himself, an unlikely Van Helsing armed with a silver cross, a wooden stake, and his ever-present tape recorder and flashbulb camera. Carol Lynley is his understanding girlfriend, and Ralph Meeker, Claude Akins, Kent Smith, and Charles McGraw costar as the Vegas cops and politicians Kolchak systematically alienates with his abrasive charm and smart mouth. Directed by Dan Curtis from a witty script by Richard Matheson, the quirky mix of horror and humor turned The Night Stalker into a ratings sensation that inspired a sequel (The Night Strangler) and a short-lived TV series (Kolchak: The Night Stalker). The X-Files creator Chris Carter acknowledges the show as a major inspiration and has cast McGavin in a recurring role as a retired X-Files veteran with an acerbic personality and a familiar rumpled wardrobe.

The original was such a great show that I can't imagine this premise working without Darren McGavin as the star.

CANCELLED!

Man this sucks...I was really starting to like this show. It just couldn't compete against the juggernaut that is CSI. I'm surprised it didn't hit it off, what with the whole X-Files vibe and all. Perhaps there were just two many similarities between it and X-Files that turned off the demographic it was aimed at (one man determined to find the truth behind what happened to a loved-one, a skeptical sidekick searching for rational explanations, a central 'mystery' plot underlying the show with 'freak of the week' sideplots in each episode...replace aliens with ghouls and goblins and you get the idea.) Of course it is from one of the X-Files creators.

Another problem is that there are already too many supernatural shows on TV this season, what with 'Medium' and 'Supernatural'. But this show is better than 'Supernatural' and better than a lot of the other crap that is yet to be cancelled. That's the problem with network TV--only so many timeslots and if you go up against any variation of CSI or Law & Order and you're screwed. I wonder if they are able to track what's being Tivoed or what's being torrented--I bet some shows' ratings would look a lot better with those numbers thrown in.
