I think HDR is more of what our eyes can see... I believe I've read somewhere that our eyes are capable of >25 stops of dynamic range. So I don't think HDR is cheating, in fact, I think it's quite the opposite. However, tone-mapping maybe a different story... In photography, there's no such thing as cheating. Everything is hard, nothing is easy. Unless you do film, and found yourself a kick-ass lab. Then all you really need to do is purchase awesome film (I tend to love ektachrome VS recently) and give it to a good lab, and bam. Awesome colors right out of the box :)
