Nifty new device from BestBuy and Apricorn

I like it too.

BUT.. that PCI-E x1 limitation will leave you feeling ripped off when it bottlenecks the speed after you put a fast 6G SSD on there. Probably another Marvell 91xx chip running the show there, I would guess.

Still can't figure out why the cheap bastards(3rd party mfgrs) keep using that chip instead of the 9182 or 94xx series chips with their additional PCI-E lane allowance. Is almost retarded when you think of the money they could be making by using them on cheaper entry level cards.

EDIT: now I'm confused here after paying more attention for once. This card just pulls power from the PCI-E but actually still uses the rear SATA3 port to connect to the mobo? Or allows another to be connected and run through the PCI-E as well?

So this would be limited to about 500MB/s maximum, most likely less due to overhead and stuff.

It's slick but id just rather use a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter.

there is no way that thing will even come close to 500MB/s.

None of the other add on cards are going beyond 400MB/s unless they use the more xpensive Marvell 94xx series or ROC. Then we are moving well beyond the $50 cards.

Umm, as far as I can tell, it gets SATA from a SATA cable connector, and power from PCIe

That's what I initially thought as well but upon closer inspection(thanks to VirtualLarry's link).. it is just another PCI-E Marvell based 6G add on card without the raid option. What other 6G chip could be on there for that price, right?

The extra rear sata port is just for an auxilliary drive but it is in fact a PCI-E based data interface.

not sure where you're getting that it is a PCIe interface.

Easy to install, the Velocity Solo is an industry standard PCIe 2.0 card designed to add a 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD) via a super fast SATA III connection.

The way I read it, it's a SATA controller card with two ports and a mount for a 2.5" drive, not a direct link from the drive to PCIe

Then I think you may have read it wrong. It is essentially a highpoint 620 like this.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816115072.. but with an onboard drive mount(including power from the PCI-E) for 1 of the ports.. and another rear facing port(unpowered) for an additional non-raid/single drive.

Same type of interface.. same 6G chip.. different port layout with one drive riding cowgirl style, is all. 🙂

I think groberts is generally right. An x1 PCIE would really throttle a fast drive's throughput. Cool card though.

so, has anyone here actually used one of these? I'm considering it for a boot drive with a sata2 ssd. unfortunately, I also have a SI3114 PCI SATA RAID controller already in the system with a RAID-5 array.

Is there any specific reason why you cannot connect SSD to your mainboard?

You won't be getting much speed adventage over native Sata2 ports on Intel ICH9/10 controler anyway if at all.

QFT.

Same junk , different configuration.
