Nifty *free* weekend camping places in norcal? *free*

All you Sacramentoens and Bay Area-ins gotta know of a place.

It'll probably be a one day thing, at most a one day, crash in cars, and drive home second day thing. Yosemite is too crowded for the short trip we want and I don't know the area that well.

Any ideas? I figure there should be plenty of places up north where we can just park the cars somewhere and go hiking, right?

Any info would be appreciated.

I'd suggest you give this website a look and call the ranger who oversees whatever area you want to go to. Ask them about Primative camp-sites (no running water) where you must pack all of your stuff in. The still will charge, but the fee is much less than the $18/nt at car-campgrounds.

I believe that one can "camp" anywhere in a National Forest for free, The exception being "improved" areas, of course.

Get a National Forest Map in NoCal at a decent fishing store. Check out the unimproved roads (usually old logging roads and such). Find one close to somewhere cool in the middle of nowhere and go for it.

good luck getting a spot

Especially free.

Sorry for late replies, took a nice little nap.

Does that pertain to this weekend? To clarify, it'll probably be next weekend (the 15th).

Thanks for the replies, grohl, Fmr12B, and KLin.
