What are the benefits of buying an expensive card from Intel or 3Com instead of some cheap card from SMC, CNet or Shihatzu? I'm gonna be using them in a home network with a Linux server and one or two windows machines.

I've had very good performance from Netgear FA310TX 10/100 NIC's. You can pick them up for about $20.00 each and I've yet to have any kind of a problem.

If you have the extra $$ go with the Intel, 3com expensive ones...

Otherwise Netgear, D-Link and Linksys all have good and reliable NICs... Those would fit your application perfectly...

The Intel and 3com nics aren't terribly expensive if you buy online. Mwave has 3com and Intel workstation nics for about $40; it's whne you go to CompUSA and they charge you $100 for the same stuff.
