Nicotine gum or patch when you can't smoke?

So a question for smokers: When you are doing something for a long period of time and you can't smoke, do you use nicotine gum or patches instead? My friend was talking about at work how engineers and other professionals who smoked generally are looked down upon. Since he isn't able to smoke throughout the day at work, he uses a nicotine patch for the 8-12 hour day at work.

Do you just suck it up or do you use something else that people can't easily see/notice?
