Nick in tire

no, not the forum troll, but a a real nick. I wouldn't call it a gash, but a few centimeters' thick nick along the inner rim of the tire, just next to the hub cap. A scratch there on the cap seems to confirm my suspicion that I endured this injury while parking too close to a curb.

So, is there anything to be done? The cut doesn't appear to penetrate the core/threads/belts--whatever you want to call it--of the tire. I drove it by a Midas this morning as they were the closest spot, and the mechanic confirms that. Tells me it should be safe and nothing to worry about--also nothing can be done save replacing the tire.

I thought there was some kind of resin that you could use, though, to glue the rubber back together? Would Super Glue, or Gorilla glue work?

more info:

This was brought to my attention driving home yesterday, along a preposterously pot-holed and cavernous road in town. after one bump that I couldn't avoid, I noticed a slightly shrill whistling noise, that sounded as if it were rotating. after about 100 feet, it was obvious that it was coming from my car. sigh....parked at gas station, needed to fill up anyway, and noticed the nick (rear passenger side), about where the noise was coming from. I first thought that I had jarred loose a front break pad or something--crazy, right?--but the gash made me think that what I heard was escaping air. I don't hear the sound anymore, though, and the tire has not deflated over night.

If the mechanic told you that it's safe, and didn't try to sell you a new tires or two, you're good to go.

keep a close eye on the sidewall. if it starts bulging or bubbling, it is time to replace the tire.

INFLATE TO MAX SIDEWALL!!!111!

If it doesn't explode you are lucky... if it starts bulging or bubbling replace it.

I have the same issue with one of my tires. I have maybe a 4mm divet but the rubber there is still attached to the tire. I was able to use some gorilla glue to glue it back in place. I've passed two safety inspections with the tire like that and no bulge has developed.

good to know. I'll try and get some pics when I get home tonight. I don't think I'm going to be getting this puppy on the expressway before this is dealt with, so I'm hoping it should be fine.

The lady will need it a few times for grocery strips during the two weeks that I am away.

and yes, I was assuming that since the Midas guy didn't try to up-sell me, it's probably fine. 🙂
