Edit: This may belong in the OS sub-forum instead

I had a customer with a Win7 computer lose power recently (which shut the PC off while running) & it goofed up his ability to boot up. Tried startup repair, tried restoring a restore point, tried the OEM M$ repair disc, plus a couple tricks & tutorials online, no dice - one of the rare instances the normal fix-it tools didn't work. Came across this tutorial:

It uses NeoSmart's Easy Recovery Essentials software:

Base price is $20, extra features like partition editing for $40, a server version, plus a general technician's license is available. You can burn a CD & boot it up (or load it on a USB stick using EasyBCD). It basically boots up into a Linux-esqe live environment where you launch the recovery software, select automated repair, and select the Windows drive, and let it do its thing. It finished, I rebooted (did an initial scandisk check), and it booted up successfully. Normally I'd use a multi-tool boot CD or something, but I needed to get this one up ASAP & this did the trick. There's a variety of other tools on it as well:

Including some advanced technician tools:

Anyway, if you get stuck & need a fix pronto, for a fee, this will do it for you. Again, I prefer free tools for obvious reasons, but this was a solid performer for the money.
