Just as I was going into my local computer hole to buy some discount discount discount items a totally restored lancaster took off maybe 100 yards away from one of the army bases in town (Toronto).

I love aviation.

That is an awesome plane. I have always loved them. I wonder why we never hear about any French planes from WWII?

Certainly a historically significant plane, but it wasn't tough enough to sustain a daylight bombing campaign. I would love to see one fly in person! Very cool for you.

Dambusters FTW!

Being that the French bowed out early, they never had a chance to launch any new designs! They had a competent pre-war fighter, but IIRC, their bombers sucked.

I wonder what the Mynarski Lanc was doing in Toronto? It usually only lands at Mount Hope.

I got to dance with my GF under the wings of that behemoth at my unit's 150th birthday...quite the experience.

Heh! Anyway, the French fighter to which I referred is the Dewoitine D520.. The article claims a greater than 2:1 kill ratio! (Although some of the victims were the HS126 bi-planes)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Lancaster

The Avro Lancaster was a four-engine World War II bomber aircraft made initially by Avro for the Royal Air Force (RAF). First used in 1942, together with the Handley-Page Halifax it was the main heavy bomber of the RAF, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and squadrons from other Commonwealth and European countries serving with RAF Bomber Command. The Lancaster was primarily a night bomber

I think the plane they were working on just before they surrendered was called the chicken.😀
