I know we don't talk much about lighting techniques around here, but I found this guy's (edit: Wayne Fulton) website and it's brilliant. It neatly sums up what I spent several years teaching myself when I started out. While it's nothing new or ground breaking, it's solid info.

Section three alone (all I've read so far) is great reading for someone who doesn't know what to do with their flash, especially if you think the dome defuser alone is the answer to soft lighting. I giggle when I see people using a dome defuser outside!

Most flash mount diffusers act like a bare bulb flash that use every surface in the room to reflect the light. It does a good job at soften the light in a pinch (and cheap), but can't replace multiple studio flashes and umbrellas.

Natural light and a flash for fill light, with a few reflectors will do wonder.

Wayne is a member of another forum I used to frequent (NikonCafe).

I've learned so much from him and he is always there to help with flash type questions. He truly seams like a good guy with a wealth of information he is willing to share.
