Velodyne is selling their discontinued CHT series satellite speaker directly through their site. They have the white CHT system (4 white satellites, 1 black center - they figure the center will go near a black TV) for $159 shipped. Retail was originally $599, and the black system is selling for $300 through their site. (The drivers are the same as the ones in their Deco series, which is selling for $600 w/ an 8" sub...)

Velodyne is obviously known for their subwoofers, but have delved into the main speaker market a few times. The speakers are Chinese made, but the drivers were designed by Velodyne. Also, keep in mind these were manufactured a while ago - mine were made in 2000. Then again, quality speakers from 5 years ago are still quality speakers today. My impression from reading some posts about these on AVS by the Velodyne guys, is that people just can't wrap their brains around Velodyne producing anything other than subs.

I ordered a set of these to go with my Velodyne CHT-12 sub I picked up from CC a while back for $250. The sound is great - significantly better than my mismatched Infinity bookshelves I was using previously. I moved into a new apartment and needed a new center, and was also considering a wall-mounted solution, so I figured for $159 I would give this a try. For the cost of a decent center (which wouldn't have matched my other speakers), I got a complete satellite system that sounds better than my previous one.

You can read a review of these here:

The review is also from 2000, but he does say that at $599, he compares these in build and sound quality to a $1200 system. (The gold binding posts, heavy mdf, etc., are impossible to find in a system of this price.)

Pick up a decent sub somewhere for $250 or whatever, and for $400 you have a killer system. :)
