Just got a form to renew my plates. The total is $134.75. I was about to write a check for that amount when I noticed a fine print:

Total includes $5 optional donation to state parks. They are asking you to subtract from total if you don't want to donate. WTF? Somehow that feels illegal.

No choice - can't pay online, for some reason their online form is giving me an error.

I am generally opt-out clauses in everything. That sucks. However, please consider having that donation made anyway.

I did. I just think it's wrong, since obviously they're praying on people who do not pay attention and donate by accident.

Considering the condition of most states' finances, I think the parks dept. really IS praying that people won't notice. :D

On TEDTalks there's an interesting bit from Daniel Ariely about behavioral economics..

Basically in two northern european countries, they were having massive differences in terms of people volunteering for organ donation. Apparently it was solely influenced by one country having opt-in clause and the other an opt-out.

I think people are more likely (from error, or apathy, or simple human behavior) to donate that 5 dollars if it was already included in the total, rather than excluded. That's probably why the form is as such.

Ok that's going too far. I was ok with the sneaky $5 donation but you didn't say they were forcing religion on people too.

Nice scam, WA departing of licensing

Where are they departing from? Where are they going?

obviously they're praying on people

That makes as much sense as praying on bended knee...:p

English motherfucker...learn it and use it. :p

That's not really a scam, but it is sort of an "underhanded" way to get you to donate.
My wife & I grew up in "Warshington" and the state parks are among the nicest in the country. IMO, the extra $5 would is a great investment in the state park system. BUT, I'm not pleased with the way they've done this.

Some do but we do use English here also. ;)

You use American English. I do not. "Cheque" is the original, correct spelling.

I don't think I know anyone with a cheque book any more - and most young people don't carry any cash either. No need to with electronic payment methods available.

My water bill always includes a $1 optional donation that they thrown on to the bill. It's kind of shady.

Personally though I'd pay $5 for the parks. They're probably going to close a bunch here in AZ and it's a real shame.

I think I'd go with this. Our Q is way underutilized over here. It needs to be given a chance to shine :^D

WA state dept of licensing doesn't accept credit or debit cards. Checks or cash only.
