Is your compan paying actuals? or are you getting a fixed amount and paying for housing out of pocket?

I absolutely LOVED eating at Mama Mia Restaurant which was a short walk from our hotel (Ramada.) Their free bread was AMAZING! (though, aparently reviews aren't great)

My MIL lives in Sunrise. Everything you might need is within a 5 minute driving radius. My wife's friend lives closer to Ft. Lauderdale beach, which, personally, is where I'd choose to live.

What's the budget? I just spent a week on Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Traffic is an issue in Ft. Lauderdale and more so in Miami.

More details are needed.

Just make sure where ever you live is not more than 50% senior citizens.... or you may end up with an 8 p.m. curfew/

I actually lived in the Ft Luaderdale/Miami area and other than being uber crowded... it wasn't a bad place for the short term... of course this was many many years ago. I was going to school then and wasn't making much money and stayed in some crappy places even.

I have an aunt who lives there. Like the rest of Florida, it's a hell hole.

We have some of the most expensive property here as well as most exotic cars are sold out of S. Florida.

It's a hell-hole if you are a broke-ass buster.

How old are you? Are you married? Kids? Like the beach? Etc. Etc. There are some nice corporate housing options in the area. I recall looking at a few when we moved back here in 2010, but none would allow dogs, so it didn't work for what we needed.

Where you'll be working makes a big difference as to where you want to be located too. Shoot me a PM if any of this is super secret.

If you want some advice, stay out of Coral Springs. Alky lives/used to live there, so there goes that neighborhood. ;) In Ft.Lauderdale look around Broward Blvd. east of the tunnel. The Victoria Park neighborhood is very nice. Old time Florida with newish homes. You would be really close to the beach and about a mile from downtown. Expensive, but not like Las Olas or Harbor Beach. If you want to venture further out, you can try Plantation, Sunrise or Weston to the west, Pompano Beach ( near the beach only) to the north or Lauderdale by the Sea also to the north. South you have Hollywood and Dania. Kinda old school Florida, not to my liking. To the northwest you have some nice areas in Coconut Creek , the aforementioned Coral Springs and Parkland. Those last three are about 30-40 min away depending on the traffic.

1) Where will you be working (location)?
2) What kind of activities do you like to do?
3) Are you single or married?
4) Do you like the Beach?
5) Does traffic annoy you?
6) What are you looking to spend?

I lived in Ft. Lauderdale for 1.5 years for my job (been gone for about a year now). My wife and I enjoyed where we lived (half way between downtown and the Beach on Las Olas Blvd), but I might not recommend it to you based on your responses above. Overall I hated Florida (people, traffic, weather), but the beach is nice and it can be fun to hit Las Olas or 2nd Street. The beach gets overly crowded on the weekends all summer, so it was really nice to be able to walk to it. I am also a big runner, so being able to run along the beach everyday was a big part of my decision to live so close by. Running anywhere else is Florida is pure misery. We really got into paddle boarding while we were there, and found that we really enjoyed living on the inner coastal so that we could go for a quick paddle whenever we wanted.

Where do Tiger Woods, Celine Dion, Bruce Springstein, and many other celebrities live...yes, S. Florida.

Most exotic cars are sold out of here as well. Only the poor hate Florida.

You have no idea what rich/wealthy is and the reason they live in Florida is so they do not have to pay State Income Tax. You're not a 1%'er let alone a 5%'er. Get back to work, you have children to feed!

Please give me some support on your thesis that the majority of "exotic" cars are sold in S. Florida? I've got you at #2 in Luxury cars 'per capita" due to retirees as Median Household income is complete shit and your more than 2% lower than Cali.

I think you've been watching too many Michale Bay movies lately.

You do realize that space-wise FL is mostly rural, there is also a significant portion of the space devoted to agriculture and a lot is protected swampland and/or lakes, that answers the "zip code" question. The biggest problem is the blue-hairs keep voting assholes like Rick Scott to governor, if you dare say the word "union" your most likely to be "discharged" in short order. Unemployment maxes out @275/wk if your lucky enough to qualify. Fine place for retirees and those in the medical care industry as with all the old folks down here there's no problem finding employment. Weather is hot as hell in the summer but there is such a thing as "acclimation", I often wonder how someone in Wisconsin deals with -10 degree temps, same thing, acclimation, you learn how to dress properly and deal with it..

I prefer the standard colored wife-beater, lets the heat come off the shoulder and back, works well in the heat. Also try and move as little as possible outdoors, the more you use your muscles, the more heat must be dissipated which is almost impossible in the FL summer as the humidity is so high sweat refuses to evaporate. Just get your shit done early in the day if possible, don't wait until 4PM to mow the yard, you will pay dearly..

Pfffttt... I can't remember the last time I wore shoes or long pants/jeans on the weekend. It's probably been a good 8 months or so (not counting a random wedding here or there).

Ive only been here a month but so far I haven't worn pants at all and wore my shoes maybe a couple times.

I need some new sandals though.. mine are like 14 years old and almost done. Any recommendations?

I've got the same quandary. My most excellent sandals have fallen victim to one of my great danes. He didn't chew them... he stepped on them as we were walking. I still wear them, but they're completely torn up.

Quicksilver has a good selection. Teva does too. Either are good choices. I find sports companies like Nike do not make a good beach style sandal. They slip on wet surfaces.

Chaco Flip-Flops are awesome. I've had them for 5+ years and they are barely broken in. They may cost 2-3x as much as Reefs, but they last forever.
