Yeah, I guess that's not really what spotters are for.. catching dropped weight. Looking at the video again, it took 3-4 guys just to lift the weight to the rack.
 
Ow! Least it didn't land on his neck. You can't blame the spotters though, because the spotter isn't there to "catch" a barbell loaded up with weights. That guy would have been screwed either way, especially with the way the "spotters" would have caught the weight (the one on the left actually caught his side a bit if you watch it closer, but it still bounched off his chest) He definitely needed to keep his wrists bent more - there's no way your thumbs were meant to support that much weight.
