I know there are probably threads about this but I'm fixing to head home and thought i would share this with ya. Link

I just bought a Dell 2005fpw and love it however it wont work with the new format of DVDs coming out. I'll have to buy another one!!!! Sure I can stick with Vista but if i want to watch Blue-Ray or HD-DVD disc on my computer I'll have to upgrade my monitor.

Kudos to Microsoft

1) Repost about 10 times over. This story initially broke about a month ago.

2) THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MICROSOFT. Anything that can play encrypted HD content is going to require HDCP or something like it. You should be mad at the folks behind the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray specs; they are the ones demanding draconian copy protection on this stuff.

Looking at your system, I wouldn't worry too much about buying a new monitor. ;)

"Most Monitors Won't Play New HD Video"

That's quite an untrue blanket statement. You will still be able to play High-Def resolutioned games or DivX videos, maybe not HD-DVD/Blu-Ray or Windows Media, but that doesn't consist of EVERYTHING HD.

It'll probably be cracked before it comes out anyway because there's still a software part of this. Man, that would be hilarious. (Unless you bought a new monitor for this.) Besides, the real hackers will find a way to get it out. Obviously they wouldn't be dumb enough to use this kind of protection. It's the same DivX ripped movies as usual. I don't see the point in this protection. It's destined for failure. That makes me sound like a pirate, doesn't it? :p

Don't blame me for you being lazy. Please search before posting news items, and it helps if you understand them before you start spouting off about them.

Hah at least you didn't do like I did. I bought a really nice 65" HD RPTV for about $4000 almost 3 years ago before HDMI was widely available. The way things are going, it looks like no HD-DVD/Bue-Ray for me or my HT either. Time will tell I guess.

LOL very true. I'm sure there are some hackers who are already working on but it would suck to by a 1k+ monitor just to play these :p

I hope so. The funny thing is I've been watching movies, shows, etc. in HD (just using regular component cables) for over a year and a half now through DirecTV. LOTR looked great in HD. ;)

But apparently the movie industry feels their movies should only be displayed in hi-def by utilizing the HDMI interface and forgoing the older tech (i.e. component interface). All because of copy protection.

edit: Don't know if you know this but HDMI was actually DEVELOPED (partially anyways) by the movie industry.

Very true but you have to remember just exactly how many monitors out there actually have HDCP-compliant DVI ports. I don't even think I can count them on 1 hand. The Gateway 21" widescreen monitor just came out about a month ago and supports HDCP-compliant DVI ports. I know that was one of the pluses people were talking about here in the video forum. But again that was just released about a month ago.

That doesn't exactly help him with the one he has now, though.

HDMI is just DVI (with or without HDCP) and audio bundled together on one cable. You can convert between DVI and HDMI without a problem. The issue is displays that don't support HDCP. Most new HDTVs do, but most computer monitors don't (either because of cost, complexity, licensing, or all of the above).

HDCP is an end-to-end encryption and copy protection protocol; it's pretty well-designed, and there is not an easy way around it. It also generates keys on a per-connection basis, and there are facilities for updating the protocol and invalidating devices that are compromised, so it's not a 'break it once, break it forever' sort of system like CSS.

This isn't MS's fault.

This is the MPAA's fault.
Also those behind HD-DVD & Blu-Ray.

Fcuk 'em all!

A 20" widescreen a bit small for HD-DVD anyway.

If you only do movie watching in front of your computer (and not from across the room or something), a 20" widescreen can be quite adequate, IMO anyway. I have a 2005FPW and watch a lot of HDTV on it, works great for me. :)

It does suck that we won't be able to use our monitors for HD DVD's coming out...I guess they don't really want our money anyway. ;)

I'd seriously recommend it for those upgrading monitors.

Also, it's cheap :D

Yeah, it looks nice, but I still haven't seen opinions or a review of the monitor from someone who actually has one. In any case I do agree it's probably the best option for those buying a monitor today, but that doesn't help any of us who already shelled out for a 20"+ LCD in the past year that doesn't support that HDCP crap...
