AOL free 2gb email service is now active. go to www.aim.com and signup a foobar@aim.com screenname and go to http://mail.aol.com and access your account !!!

AOL started offering free blogs service for non members (http://pc.channel.aol.com/aimblogs [aol.com]) and is offering 2 gb email for non members (http://www.aim.com/aim_mail.adp [aim.com]).

they made the paying members email accounts as bottomless storage - infinite storage !!.
Also, seems like they opened up their photo service as well http://pictures.aim.com - seems like you can upload unlimited number of pictures. Each picture can be upto 100 megs size - time for some steganography techniques to encrypt your movies in jpegs ;-)

Seems like this healthy competetion is a boon for the end users.

from the website - features offered include

Here's a summary of the features you will enjoy with AIM Mail:

? Industry-leading Spam and Anti-virus protection: Users of AIM Mail can rely on AIM to help keep their mail box free of junk mail and harmful viruses.

? 2 GB of mail storage: Users of AIM Mail can access their storage from any web-enabled computer. AIM Mail also comes with a search feature that makes it easy for users to find messages in their Inbox, Sent Mail, or Stored Mail.

? IMAP access: Users can get their AIM Mail through their favorite email application including MS Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mac and Eudora.

? Single Log-on: Users will only have to login once to use both AIM and AIM Mail. Once logged into AIM, they can check, read and send mail without having to login in again. They can also launch the e-mail service from the AIM Buddy List or the Mail panel in the AIM Today welcome screen.

? Integration of AIM Presence: The Running Man icon appears in the e-mail headers if a sender or cc-ed recipient is logged in to AOL or AIM. This allows users to see when friends and colleagues are online and enables them to easily respond via e-mail or IM.

? Unsend Message: Users can cancel and unsend a message after it's been sent to another AOL or AIM Mail user if the message has not been read. Users can also check the status of a message sent to an AOL or AIM user and confirm if and when the message has been read.

? Plus, many other features, including: Enhanced spell-checking, auto-addressing, rich-text formatting, message signatures and more!

and you can't figure out why everyone hates AOL? I admit, their ads are somewhat funny, but the service has been and always will be horid IMO.

what's the attachment limit on sending? if it's not bigger than 10mb like most(gmail, etc), then it's worthless in my opinion.. just another email account that will hold more spam.
does anybody know?

Dear Steve Case,

How does it feel to have a failing company that missed the broadband train by about 3 years that would later partner with Time Warner Cable in a pathetic attempt to offer broadband, only to watch subscribership drop while Time Warner publicly expressed extreme desire to drop you at the curb?

While i dislike aol as much as other ATers, and therefore regard this as cold, I don't think this is even close to as bad as the free ipod people. Lots of people use AIM, some might be interested in getting an aim e-mail. *shrug*

I know several people who keep paying for AOL because they don't want to migrate their email, even after getting broadband.

Good job, AOL.

Seems like it is now active - i downloaded the stuff. I think for aol accounts, they are making it bottomless - meaning there is no limit - concurrently with that of aim accounts.

Seems like from the help, total attachment size is about 16 megs

You can send and receive up to eight attachments per message. A message and its attachments can be as large as 16 MB.
To remove an attachment, click on the word [remove] next to the name of the attachment.

Also, they opened up their photo sharing and photo album service as well . I heard that it is again bottomless and you can upload pictures upto 100 megs each picture and unlimited number . Is it possible to do some steganography to get movies in there in jpeg format :)

What's the point of a 2GB mailbox when the AOL retards are still stuck on dial-up, it would take weeks to download

This particular deal has nothing to do with AOL software. It's free mail and blogs for non-AOL members who use AIM, which is free. It's slightly less storage than Gmail, but according to ramkumar's post, there's more attatchment space per email, and there's IMAP, which I'd say is significantly superior to Gmail's POP3 access (IMAP allowing control of stuff on the server from all locations accessing the account). Seeing as many of us use AIM, I'd say this is pretty hot- certainly as hot as a free Gmail account.

Once again: this deal has nothing to do with AOL software. It's based on AIM and is really simply webmail. Apparently, people don't bother to read the actual posts!

I tested it at 1:00am central time & it was working... I tried to see how big of an attachment i could send, & it wouldn't let me send a 12 meg file even though it accepts attachments up to 16 megs... 8/
