Nice Dealership, or are they covering up their error?

I had a small low speed accident August 14th (2002 Honda Civic) which broke off the right rear tire and did no other damage. I didn't know where to get the repairs done, so I told the towtruck driver to tow it to the dealership.

A couple days later I got an estimate from the dealership body shop, they said they ordered the parts, and they would be finished in 2-3 weeks. 3 weeks would have been Wednesday. I heard nothing. I called this morning and asked about our vechile since we need it as soon as possible (we only had that one car and have been borrowing from several family members). The body shop said they had no record of my vehicle and transferred me to the service dept. They had no record of it either. I asked them to look up the license plate instead of my name, and they found one record on the 19th but it didn't have any info. So they said they would call back. An hour later I got a call saying that a strut was on back order and it would be another 2-3 weeks. Needless to say I was ticked, but if a part is on back order I figured the repair shop couldn't really do anything but wait with me.

I told my wife and she was furious. She didn't believe them and called to complain. Now the dealership is giving us a free new loaner 2002 Civic with all features during the repairs AND they are taking all the parts off of another new 2002 Civic in their showroom to put on our car to get the repairs done ASAP. They are basically giving up 2 cars for the next week to please us. This makes me suspicious. Are they just being nice, or did the goof up and misplace our car and are trying to cover their behinds?

They forgot about your car and left it in the back of the lot somwhere. Now that you're pissed, and you're an actual paying customer, they're going to fix the thing so that you actually come back in the future.

They goofed and you need to take some lessons from your wife in diplomacy.

Sounds like they screwed up and they are trying to make you happy.

I guess you're not claiming this on your insurance? B/c usually your insurance company will keep on the dealer, and will also cover you for a rental car while it's in the shop.
Which is another reason they'll keep on them--they don't want to pay for that rental car any longer than they have to!

Also, I know the two Honda dealers nearest me will loan you a car if your repair is estimated to take longer than 2 days, so once they realized their mistake, they might just be giving you what they should have given you three weeks ago if they hadn't misplaced your car and/or record.
