Nice confluence of price cuts should make this spring official new system time.

From what I have gathered the E4300 will be <$130 by mid spring. Also with memory prices set to bottom out by Q2 you could be looking at a sweet overclocker system for peanuts. C2D mobos should be more stable by then too.

I figure by then I could get a new proc, mobo, memory upgrade for around $400. Then I can spend all the savings on that new Dell 27" LCD 🙂

Yup, I was all set to order parts for a new C2D build...then I read about the C2D price cuts coming up and RAM prices (finally) beginning to fall. Plus R600 is coming up which should cause gfx card prices to drop, so I think it's in my best interest to wait.

I'm about to build a new system and am far too impatient to wait til mid spring to build it. However, I was gonna go with 2gb DDR2 800 ram, should I just buy a 1gb stick instead? How much are ram prices going to be dropping?

Hard to say. In the past there have been drops of as much as 50% over a few months when there have been memory gluts...which apparently is what people are anticipating and seem to be starting now.

Yeah I gave $220 for 2gb 800mhz memory . Not cheap but not to bad. I don't expect prices to get much less than $150(if that cheap) for the same stuff. I could have saved $70 to wait 5-6 months(bought 2 months ago) which IMO ain't worth it. But thats just guessing. If it really does drop more than $150 for 2gb I think I will hop on some 1000mhz memory if cheap enough and sell my current memory off.

I still don't think its worth it to wait 2-3 months for the price drop but if you have the patience then cool. But I don't have much of it 😀.

Well it's all a game for me. I mean, I really don't need a new computer. My overclocked Opteron 165 from 2 years ago is still top notch for gaming. And even if I did I have a $5000 annual expense account which would cover anything I wanted really. It has always been about playing the game and waiting until that magical time when suddenly everything falls into place - great overclocking CPU hits the streets, mobos mature, cheap memory, and usually a drop in video card prices or a good budget high end card (like that new 8800 320mb card).

I see this all happening in about 2-3 months. Then I can retire the Opteron and feel good about not wasting too much money ont he unnecessary upgrade. But I agree. If I needed it right now I would blow the cash in an instant. But what AT'er really needs it right now?
