:p (Because it's Bush)

and really.......because it's really sad that our country can't fix this problem...nationwide!

Here is an example of the kind of issue that might turn Ohio into Florida.. Take a look at the absentee ballot for Cuyahoga County, where Cleveland is located. Suppose you wanted to vote for George Bush. Which square would you fill in? If you picked the one I colored in green, congratulations, you just threw your vote away. The one in red is the correct choice to vote for George Bush. Blue is for Kerry. I guess that after losing her reelection bid, Palm Beach County, FL, elections supervisor Theresa LePore must have gotten a new job designing ballots in Ohio. I didn't think ballot design was rocket science. Shows you what I know.

If this hasn't been altered and is in fact a real, unedited scan of this ballot, that is absurd.

Sheesh. The Arizona ballots look pretty simple, but this is not good for the Cuyahogans.

It looks to me like it is a punch card ballot and the card is meant to be inserted into a slot with a hole aligned for punching out the proper candidate. Showing the actual punch card would not be relevant, as everything should line up correctly with the proper candidate when inserted into the slot.
But I agree that this punch card crap is old and should be replaced.

Who designs these ballots?

All user-error, and 'read the instructions' admonitions aside, IF that's a real ballot, it's statistically impossible that Bush won't lose votes because of it.

What a bunch of rubbish. (threw in the 'british' word to demonstrate my loyalty to the Queen, just for CanOWorms, in case he's watching ;))

Yes, but this is an absentee ballot, meaning you're on your own (there's no slot that lines anything up for you)

WTF, man if the vote is close, this gives the Repubs an easy excuse for a recount. How f*cking hard is it to make a coherent ballot.

Why isn't there a single ballot and voting system for the whole country? This seems to be the obvious solution. Just add the pages for the local/state candidates at the end. The first page seems to always be the presidential candidates - it should be uniform.

They probably have a manual but yes this kind of ballot is grossly missleading. I think I like our low tech method: You have a long list of names(parties) separated by a black line each. to the right of each list item there is a circle - you want them you mark the circle , otherwise leave it alone. Of course this isnt dummysafe either if you mark more circles than you have votes - you threw your vote away. But to prevent that a sample bollot and a "manual" is usually send out to all ppl of voting age well before the election.

Off topic: Why do you have to register to vote? I mean once you turn 18 you can vote right? So why this extra hassle?

I suggested tying it to the selective service enrollment or taxation, but conjur supplied some reason why this is a bad idea. I can't remember what his idea was, but IIRC it was valid and there is a reason to separately require registration.

Hard to say, because I don't think all the votes are ever counted. IIRC, once one candidate has sufficient votes to carry the state/district, they discard excess absentee ballots and such. This is one reason Gore might not have actually won the popular vote in 2000 - the majority of absentee votes are usually Republican, since many are from the military. :p

I live right next to Cuyahoga County. the ballet is real.

This county is a heavy democratic area, It will more than likely go Kerry without a doubt.

I mean Dennis Kucinich is a congressman from this county.

In Canada, you are automatically registered when you file your income tax form. If you missed it that year, you can register with Elections Canada beforehand, or even at the ballot box with photo ID and proof of address.

Also, we use a simple ballot with a circle beside each name.

What I think is more egregious about the ballot is that they refuse to name the party affiliations for anyone but the Republicans and Democrats. WTF is this "other party candidate" sh!t next to Badnarik (Libertarian Party) and Peroutka (Constitution Party, I had to look it up) ?
