Nice $500 Receiver and $1000-$1300 Speakers

Hey All,

I posted awhile back about getting a new setup using Tweeter. Well, to make a long story short, the rep I was using left for a new job, and now they are trying to oversell me. So I'm doing it on my own instead.

I'm looking for a receiver in the $300-$500 range that has the following features:

XM Radio
7.1 Channel
HDMI

I was originally thinking of the Pioneer VSX-72TXV for about $750 but am thinking there may be a better deal out there for a receiver with similiar features.

For speakers I purchased some Bose Acoustimass 16 Series 6.1 Surround Sound speakers for a good deal from the Bose factory outlet, but I've decided to return them for a refund and go with something different. My range is $1000-$1300.

I was looking into the Axiom Epic Midi 125 line. Which is $1500 for the 6.1 system. I've heard only good things about them, but was hoping to keep my total cost lower than this. Maybe in getting a less expensive receiver I can go for the higher quality speakers.

Does anyone have any recommendations on these Axiom speakers or on something a little less expensive?

Incase it helps, the room this setup is going into is 27x16.

Thanks,
Ethan

I completely love mine, if you want check out the thread on the SE verson on avsforum.com

those are some amazing speakers, I love mine, plus price is right in your range.

Aslong as you check on good brand of receivers you wont' be disapointed. You may want to check out the Pioneer VSX 1016TXV, or 1015, both are basicly the same as the low end elite the 52TX just quite a bit cheaper.

Then also check out like denon, marantz, onkyo, Harmon kardon,... best thing to do is go and play around with as many as you can. Heck you could order your speakers and buy one from like circuit city. If you don't like it just return it.

Edit: another thing if you got one locally is you may want to check out the Panasonic xr57 it's not a normal analog receiver, people really love or really hate the sound.

oohh my bad, the 1015 doesnt. youre right 🙂

the 1016 will probably be your best bet for what you are looking for.

HDMI making its way down into low end receivers is a pretty new thing so I don't think you have too many options. I think the Pioneer 1016 looks like a good bet for you. My 1014 did a good job when I was using it.

So is this for mostly music listening or HT applications?

What kind of ceiling height are you looking at in that 27x16 room? That could be a pretty large room to work with, especially if there are openings to other rooms. I had a similar sized room with openings to a few other spaces and my SVS 20-39 PC+ was just about right for the space.

If you're really trying to keep costs down and meet the lower range of your budget, a couple suggestions to look at would be
SVS's SBS systems
or
AV123 x-series with the sub of your choice (the x-sub wouldn't be a good match for a room that size)

Oh yeah... I made a poorly put together general audio thread you might want to look through. I made some general comments and other suggestions in there.

Go with Paradigm for Speakers and look at a Marantz Receiver. I have 2 setups based on this and they are both unbelieveable!

May have to do XM external, but otherwise might work well!

I just realized your room size. That is quite big. You'll need some good speakers for that. Since most people tend to keep speakers for a very long time (no real reason to replace them), you might want to consider getting the system over time and getting good equipment. Something to consider.

Definately something to think about if you think you might want to put more money into the system over time.

You could get a nice 2.0 / 2.1 system going initially and add the rest down the road. I'm not sure if putting another $1000 or more in the future sounds appealing to you though 😛

You would certainly have a lot more options looking for a $1300 2.0 / 2.1 setup than a 5.1 / 6.1 / 7.1 setup for the same price.

EDIT: a decent set of bookshelf speakers and a nice sub for $1300 would be a great start to having a very solid system in the room. Down the road you could add a center and then buy new mains and move the initial speakers to surround duty.

This stuff sure adds up fast though 😛
I should really stop suggesting doing something like this, it's a great way to double your budget.

Don't put too much weight into "HDMI".

Alot of receiver/pre pro's are having all kinds of problems w/ compatablity..

ie. Denon 4806, Anthem D2, etc.. these are $4K - $6K components...

If you want hdmi, then wait till Fall of 2007 for components w/ hdmi 1.3 ...

Regards,
Jose

I kind of just avoided the whole HDMI thing hoping that if I need it sometime I can just get an external HDMI switch.
