nic won't work?

I have tried a few different brands of nic in an IWill kk266 mb. They both work on other computers but not with the Iwill. Is there any setting or any other suggestions on how to get the nic to work. I have read that others have had this problem but none say how to fix it. I have removed all other devices in the pci slots and even changed pci positions of the nic and nothing. Any help would be great otherwise I will try iwill but I heard their tech support sucks.

I may have responded before to this same question.

I still have a KK266 board. It has no problems with any nic i have installed.

Does the MB detect the card at all?

Is the issue a Windows can't detect or a Board can't detect. They are 2 different things.

If it is a windows issue then it could be a conflict of resources (irq and the like). Try a different slot. Which OS is this? Is PnP OS selected in the BIOS. Sometimes toggling that helps.

Check to see if the slots are set to ISA/PCI PNP or not. There is a ISA slot on these boards.

There could be lots of reasons why the nic won't work. The best thing to do is eliminate a board issue from an OS issue and go on from there.

I have pretty much tried everything you suggest. It is detected by both the mb and win98se. It says it is working properly. I even use winipcfg and it can release and renew an ip address from the router, but no internet access? I have removed every other pci board and switched different slots and two different nic's and nothing.

Windows says it is working, IE is configured properly, tcp/ip is configured. I have run the diagnostics that came with the card and when it gets to the loopback test, it always fails, for both cards i tried? I don't know what that means.

What happens if you try to ping www.anandtech.com, for instance? Somehow this sounds like a Windows issue or perhaps an ISP who wants to sell you an IP for each machine you bring on.

But if he can release and renew an ip, then is the ip a proper ip handed out from the router? In other words is the router set for dhcp on the lan?

Is the cable correct?

If this is your personal lan and you are using broadband, then your ISP may be of help.

There is also ipaq_off and on located on the win98se cd under oldms i believe.

You could go into Network neighbourhood properties and remove all the network stuff there. Then go into device manager and remove the nic from there. Then scan for new hardware. This should set up the network settings correctly.

Which card do you wish to use? What drivers (if any) are you installing? I usually let windows look for a driver rathen than using the software's own setup.

This is a long shot:

does the router require the PCs on the lan to use specific TCP/IP settings? Wins resolution and such?

Did you try a direct connection to the modem?
