NIC vs Mobo ethernet port.

Is ther any advantage to getting a nice NIC vs using the ethernet pot on your mobo. I am a pretty heavy gamer and want to know if this would make any difference. Thanks

Given a decent chipset on both options, probably won't make any difference.

I have both. My NIC is for internet and the mobo port is for my 2 computer network (can you call that a network?). The transfer rate is really slow on the mobo port. Like 3 mb per second. Waaaahhhh!!!!! 😉

Obviously not a general experience -- if all "mobo" gigabit ports did this, we'd have lawyers contacting us for class action suits.

I have pretty much the opposite experience -- when comparing an add-on PCI NIC with onboard nVIDIA or PCIe NICs, the onboard / PCIe generally perform better in terms of throughput. But this doesn't matter until you reach high end data transfer needs.
