Exactly dedejean,

The pro-router community says you will be sadly disappointed---and that your setup will not be stable---yada yada.--and they could possibly be right---even though your setup seems to cast serious doubts on their contentions regarding stability.

BUT WHAT REALLY DISAPPOINTS ME IS THE FACT THAT NO ONE FROM THE PRO ROUTER COMMUNITY HAS COME UP WITH ANYTHING EMPHERICAL to back that assertion that a router is just more stable than ICS.

Yes we have. There's emperical and frankly common knowledge that the stack in windows is very poor.

The last time I rebooted my 7204 was for a hardware upgrade (memory and ATM card). 5 years and no failure.

Never have rebooted a 2821 - 12 months.

Never rebooted PIX 525 - 36 months and counting

Rebooted my PC - 2 days ago for instability

ICS is fine if that is what you have to use. But compared to dedicated hardware, well, there is none.

To spidey07---lots of things are common knowledge---until it turns out they just plain are wrong.---common knowledge is logically worthless--I'll believe your empherical if and when you post it---which is what cuts it from a logical standpoint---empherical evidence.

To dphantom---what is a 7204---or a 2821--or a pix 525---and what do they cost?---but with all the el-cheapie routers evidently failing---the comparison between ICS and common routers must be made at the consumer---not corporate network level.

ICS is only practical for small networks---two and maybe three computers max---but in terms of the sheer numbers of possible lan sizes--a two computer lan is probably the most common network form in existance---and I do hope empherical evidence can be posted regarding the stability of both ICS vs. routers on a cost performance basis.

Or to put it in another way---the semi tractor trailor combo is the most efficent way to go in transporting large amouts of tonnage via roads----but most people choose smaller vehicles for their needs---and in the same way--routers are the way to go for large corporate networks---but does that reasoning or common knowledge actually extend to the full range of network sizes?---and is there a point where ICS becomes the better practical choice given the dubious quality of available consumer routers?

Well, my linksys router has only failed to work when my cable connection quit. Cable goes out more often than the router which for the router is never (so far) 2+ years.

My personal experience is that people who report problems generally lack experience in the network world or think they know more than they really do ending up in trouble or are exceeding the capabilities of the equipment they purchased resulting in a disappointing experience.

If ICS works for you that's great, but a properly designed home or corporate network will be better served in general using hardware.

well said

currently... still no problems. gbit lan integrated on my mobo is so cool... no PCI bandwidth bottlenecks!!!
