Hi I am having weird problem with my D-LINK Ethernet card on a win98 box. Maybe you guys can help :)

Well it started when I tried to install a new NIC card (A 3com etherlink III). I almost completed the installation but since I forgot that I would need a windows98 cd, I aborted it half way through.

I replaced the old card and reinstalled the drivers, but then things started to get weird. Every time I tried to go to any site with IE5, IE crashes (Iexplorer.exe), I can't use email, FTP, AIM etc... But I can ping successfully in DOS. Another weird thing is if I disconnect the Ethernet cable Iexplorer doesn't crash.... it just says it can't find the server. I reinstalled the drivers, changed cards (same model), and even reinstalled windows 98. I am seriously don't know what else to do....

Thanks for any help you guys can give...:)

(edit- I can ping numeric ip's as well as domain names)

Could be an IRQ problem... because you took the card out, windows might have assigned a different IRQ to it when u put it back in, thus causing a conflict. You can manually set the IRQs in Device Manager or u can move the card to another PCI slot.

Even if windows didn't assign a different IRQ to it, and u put it in the same slot u took it out of, it could still cause a problem... Don't ask me y, but it can. I just recently had a problem like that with my TV tuner.

The fact that u reinstalled 98 throws me, because that should have fixed it. Either way, check to see if the NIC is sharing an IRQ with anything or, in windows case, if it's sharing with too many things...

Hope that helps
