nic install problems

my friend has an hp pavilion with win98se, and i'm trying to install a dlink nic card onto it; other people tried it and it didn't work; so, i removed the card, put it into another slot and booted; win98se didn't detect it; i forced the drivers onto it, and it later on finds the card; unfortunately, after rebooting, it says the drivers cannot be loaded; 'ndis, ntkern.vxd device loaders couldn't load device drivers' and that no resources are being used even tho i click to set the config manually; the card in the device manager shows the card with an exclamation point in the network adapter icon; i also did this with the newest drivers i could find from the dlink website, altho those drivers were older than the ones that win automatically put in... help me help this hot chick!
 
How old is this card? The reason I ask is because many older cards require a DOS software utility to set the IRQ settings within the card. A good example is some of the earlier 3COM Etherlink III cards. I've seen some DLINK and LinkSys cards like this as well. That's one thing to check. Another thing to try is maybe checking your device manager(found in the control panel on the system menu). If you delete all your com ports or maybe check your IRQ settings, that could solve your problem. Those are just a couple of things to try....
 
NICs don't like some PCI slots. Try it in PCI slot 2 or 3. Before you change an adapter' slot, always remove it in device manager.
