NIC death process?

Strange thread title I know... but I have to ask. Is it common for a NIC to die a slow painful death or do they most often than not just die immediately? Yesterday I setup WinXP Pro FRESH on a new RAID-0 array. Aside from the RAID array everything is existing equipment known to be operating properly. Right after I started up after Office2000 Premium SP1a installed I lost my net connection. I ping the loopback and I can't talk to the NIC. I then try ipconfig /all and it appears that TCP/IP is either dead or gone. :( Weird to say the least.

So then I look at the NIC in Device Manager and I see a bunch of new devices listed under Network Card, all with Yellow Exclamation marks on them. Some of these include Wan Packet something or another (PPTP), a second instance of my NIC (a 3Com 3C905C-TXM) with the same Packet something or another after it, and about 3 other devices including something about L2TP and IPSec. I have never seen these enumerated on any of my systems before.

Before you say it, I do know what PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec are but they are never enumerated on my system like that.

Anyways, I reinstalled WinXP Pro today as I couldn't get rid of those items and my TCP/IP was borked beyond repair. I don't have those items today but my net connection is slow. Slower than molasses in January. It benches about a third as fast as normal. This is just unacceptable to me. Is all of this indicating that my trusty 3Com NIC is dying on me or is there something else that accounts for this more logically?

Please, any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.
