NIC Card

I am in the planning stages of building a computer. I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P mother board. I know that I don't need a NIC card but I am considering getting one for safety. Here is what concerns me. I have a friend that had surge take out his cable modem and his circuit on his MOB. I of course take precautions to protect my system but I would rather loose a PCI card than the MOB. Am I wrong?

Welcome to AnandTech Froums.

Surge troubles are not like precise Laser Surgery. Installing a PCI NIC would save your Mobo for harmful surge.

You better off spending your money on a Good Surge/UPS device.

Jack I have surge protection. First I have a whole house surge protector in my power panel. My computers are on surge protected UPS's. I have DSL internet and my phone line goes thru 2 surge protectors. But if a 20 dollar PCI card would provide another level of protection, why not?

I think you're over thinking it.

You've already got a shitload of surge protection, just get the onboard NIC and call it a day.
