I had my internet connection hooked up through my motherboards built in Gigabit ethernet port ...

Consistently got speeds of 300K (2.4 mbit) download. Not too shabby

Was messing around with the computer, found an old NIC card, non gigabit, generic, and
decided to test it out and see if it worked...

Consistent 500K (4.0 mbit) download.

 .....

Could simply be how the ethernet is implemented (if it's over the PCI bus with a whole bunch of other stuff) that could've slowed it down.

I switched from onboard to an older 3com NIC and my speeds for downloading from newsgroups didn't really increase, but it was much more steady.

Before it was built into the motherboard, now it's PCI with the generic card.

I'm basing the comparison on Newsgroup downloads since the speeds are always the same.

The new (old) card almost doubled in speed.

I've always hit my cable's cap with every network card. Broadband isn't very fast compared to what even a generic nic should be able to handle.

You got me wanting to test this too. I download a lot of data so every little bit helps.

Now that I think about it...

It might have something to do with my MTU and RWIN

I remember changing those with the Motherborboard LAN and it not doing anything ...

Maybe those setings are working now with a PCI Nic card . (?)
