NIC and Win98 trouble

I recently got the SMC2435W wireless notebook card with an SMC router. Will work fine for a few hours, and then my computer has spontaneous reboots. Absolutely no problems when I remove the network card, so the SMC is clearly causing the problems.

The driver periodically shows up in the device manager with problems (error 10), but simply re-installing the driver always makes it work for another day or so. Anyone else have this problem or suggestions? Running on a Compaq 1906 notebook with Windows 98 (Japanese).

This is still in the return period. Any suggestions for a replacement router/NIC card that'll run reliably under Win98? Thinking of a Netgear MR814 router and MA401 NIC at Computers4Sure.com.

This is my wife's notebook. Plan on getting a new notebook next time we're in Japan, but in the meantime I see no point in sticking WinXP or Win2K on a 233MHz laptop. If it even runs it'll be miserably slow. Win98 works just fine for MSWord '97 and the internet, which are all she uses it for anyways. Main reason for upgrading will be for a brighter display and because the battery holds its charge for only 5 minutes. Gaming and such is on my Desktop.

I've now given up on the SMC stuff. The random reboots are getting to be too frequent, and the network card only connects half the time. They told us to upgrade to Win98SE, which is not much help.

In the meantime though, it would be nice to get a wireless network going around the apartment. Any thoughts on a good router / NIC?
