The list and my opinion:

The rule changes, approved by the NHL Board of Governors last month following the ratification of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, include:

a shootout to decide games that are tied through the conclusion of overtime;

new rink dimensions that increase the area of the offensive zones;
It's a good idea overall. Iwanted this years ago to tel lteh truth.

the elimination of the center red line in determining a two-line pass;
OK, now you are f'ing with tradition. I am TOTALLY agaisnt this. We know why they did this. To increase scoring. Tehy might attract new fans of the sport, but it might make me look the otehr way. THIS IS A HORRIBLE DECISION!

a zero-tolerance officiating standard on interference, hooking, holding and obstruction;
zero-tolerance in the NHL? It's a bad idea. Of course, it will increase scoring. I hope this falls apart. if hte players adapt though, it's a good idea. But stuff away from the play has always been ignored and should continue to be ignored.

limits on goaltenders' equipment and puckhandling.
Concur on equipment. That was long overdue.
Anyone know what is up with the new puck handling rules though?

I totally care about hockey. Hell, why do we even have football? I just want hockey aaaalllll year long so I can watch it every night and follow the statistics religiously because I love hockey so much. Go to Canada. People like it there and that's one less vote for Hilary in '08.

Haven't they said this for the past 3 years in a row?

Hockey is kinda like Soccer. There is no frequent instant gratification. You truely have to know the sport, then you will love it. Hockey is an art and IMHO, it takes more intelegence to get to the NHL than it takes a baseball player.

Goalies have a couple hash marks behind the net that they must stay within if they are to handle the puck. It looks like a trapezoid behind the net. It is designed to prevent the goalies from controlling the puck too much beyond wrapping it around the boards or just dropping it off to a defenseman. Basically, it gives the offense (forecheckers) more of a chance to attack the puck deep.

Good rule. Goalies were WAY TO PROTECTED in the past.

About the center red line, getting rid of it opens up a lot of offense for sure because of the possibilities of the long outlet pass... we're talking your own defensive zone all the way to the opponent's blue line. I'm a huge hockey fan but don't care about records and the like. Nobody will EVER score 76 goals in a season again the way it was going. Players today are bigger & stronger... it was like skating in seaweed. This opportunity for open ice equalizes it for the attackers again. I dislike soccer because the field is too big and nobody ever scores... I'm talking quality scoring chances. The new NHL will be all about the scoring chances... smaller goalie equipment too... but because of that in addition to the projected quicker entries into the attack zone, I'm scared for them now. ;)

The goalie rule was because goalies could just go outside and wander all over the place, and the players couldn't touch them or else they'd get a penalty. The new rule limits their movement so they're less likely to get in the way, I guess.

I think that the new rules are pretty good. I'm totally for those long stretch passes that you'll get with no red line. But I'm betting the no tolerance will be forgotten soon enough, like it has been in the past.

Im a fan of the NHL for a long time and im very happy to see those rule changes.The NHL, how it was, was becoming extremely boring.Coach found way to create excellent defensive system, and the hockey started looking more like a soccer game( which imo is extremely boring...i hate 1-0 stuff :p )

Did you realise that last year, no 100 points and 50 goal scorer???

Look at this stats i made.I only took the top 5 scorer un the nhl over the last 40 years and calculate their points.

1969 to 1965:523,408,377,405,384(6 team era, when in 1969, more team where introduce, and 6 more game were played, scoring really increase

1974 to 1970:548,534,562,608,460(more team where introduce, more scoring

1979 yo 1975:627,563!,555,580,619,(again, more team, scoring increased)

1984 to 1980:689,666,763,661,610,(more teams lots of scoring!!!and the greatzky era)

1989 to 1985: 787,680,610,748,720(gretzky and lemieux era)

1994 to 1990 :,580,719,591,632,634,(more teams introduce scoring a bit down comparte to 1989-1985)

from 1999 to 1995:528,460,524,665,326(48 game season 556 for 82 games),(Again new teams indroduce...scoring on way down.And indruduction of trap defensive system)

from 2004 to 2000 (descending):434,506,430,525,452,( scoring on way down, lots of team praticing trap system)

So what is the problems of the nhl? Simple.We strangle our superstars with crappy trap systems and with the dissolution of the talent, spread threw the league.

The league was at his best when there was 21 teams ( it was very good still with 24).

If those rules change, can give a bit more scoring, hell why not.Goalie were small in nets 10 years ago , now only with their size,without angle, they can cover 75% of the net, which was at about 50% 10 years ago with smaller equipment.

The nhl need new rules to break the trap system, cause they know it, coach will still practice it.So i think without the central line, it will give us mroe offence.

The only thing I have a problem with is the stuff with the goalies. 1-0 and 2-1 games can be a real drag when each team gets like only 20 shots on net. But I don't wanna see 7-5 games either. The redline definately needed to go. But if they just called the game properly you wouldn't have to change anything. Once the trap came along penalties stop being called which made for the trash mucking type game that has existed now for the last 4-5 years. And yes I am strong believer fighting is apart of the game.

The trap has to be the most boring thing to watch. It's a great system but its just like watching paint dry.

I'm looking forward to the new season and the new rules. I'm thinking it will make things a lot more intesting and I'm all for that. Hockey is one of my favorite sports, but seems to be the least liked of the major sports, and I just can't quiet figure that out.

People have a difficult time following the puck. In all honesty, even the seasoned fans aren't able to see the puck all the time either but experience helps us determine where the puck should be (the way a player skates with his stick down) when it's out of sight. I think that's where most of the casual watchers are lost.
