Year after year they are competitive.

only 3 stanley cups during that time period but always competitive.

are they the best franchise (altho not a dynasty) during the last 12 seasons?

the only other team with as many Stanley cups during that period are the Detroit Red Wings.

I can't think of another team that would be in contention as the best during that span of time.

Detroit never dropped below 2nd in their division, whereas NJ had a 3rd and 6th place finish in their division.
Cumulatively, Detroit's record is 568-251-133 during that time, whereas the Devils' was 515-289-148.

I'm a Devils fan, so I'd like to think so. ;)

The Devils win when they aren't expected to win. They're the kings of late-season comebacks and winning as underdogs.

Losing Stevens was ROUGH. And Niedermeyer and Daneyko. Brodeur benefitted heavily from the Devils' amazing defense, and it showed when he had to play without those guys. They've bounced back pretty well though I think.

I'll take the Red Wings over the Devils, considering the Wings have won 3 Stanley Cups in the last ten years, as opposed to NJ who has won three over the last twelve.

Yeah, but he said twelve years, not ten, and the Devils' first cup was a sweep of the Red Wings. ;)

frankly, i didn't realize the red wings had won 3 in the last 10 yrs when i posted this thread. i for some reason thought that there weren't many multiple stanley cup winners during the last 12 yrs.

anyway, it is still a legit debate as to which team was better, the red wings or the devils.

the devils have done it with an interesting system tho, kind of like belicheck and the pats, they keep letting their star players go but can always find replacement role players to fit in and keep a lower payroll.

I think this answers your question. NJ is like Avis--they're number 2.

You tell me which team is better:

Team A
---------
12 playoff appearances
8 Division championships
4 Conference championships
91 Playoff game wins
3 Stanley Cup championships
.693 regular season winning percentage

Team B
---------
11 playoff appearances
6 Division championships
4 Conference championships
81 Playoff game wins
3 Stanley Cup Championships
.640 regular season winning percentage

You caught me before the edit. Team B actually has 81 Playoff wins, not 91.

I agree, it is definitely close.

The Devs are definitely a competitive / "gritty" team, but as far as the best team? They would be in the top that's for sure. I would like to see what people thought about the best team over the past 20-25 years.......

Over the last 25 years, it would have to be the Oilers of the early 80's.

Gretzky, Messier, Anderson, Kurri, Tikannen, Coffey, Fuhr

The Red Wings are not far off:

Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Hasek, Hull, Chelios, Robitaille..

Different eras, defintely.

He does hold the record. 9 as a coach and 1 as a special assistant (or whatever his title was in Pittsburgh).
