I didnt think he would go so quickly, maybe 18 or 20th, but Alex Picard from my hometown Lewiston Maineiacs got picked in the first round of he NHL draft, 8th pick over all!

The kid is good, and will only get better, it was cool to see him get picked up, I used to see him all the time while he was here, went to a few parties togethor, etc.

And for the haters :)

Hockey Players

Thats me with the goatee, and Alex on my right in the blue hat.
Plus a bunch of other players who are eligble, one of them is already drafted by Nashville but he stayed for another year in thew QMJHL.

I'm looking forward to seeing Alexander Ovechkin play... Brian Burke says he's the best prospect he's seen since Jagr came into the NHL, and Ovechkin is a 2 way player. That's huge.

My Blues picked up goalie prospect Marek Schwarz at #17. He is the #1 ranked European goalie, ranked #6 overall by the Hockey News. Not too shabby.

Goaltending has been the #1 need for the Blues for a decade. It's about freakin time they addressed it by infusing some youth into the system.

Canucks draft goaltender in first round

Sports Ticker
6/26/2004

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - Selecting 26th overall, the Vancouver Canucks made high schooler Cory Schneider the first goaltender they've ever taken in the first round of the NHL draft.

Schneider was ranked just seventh among North American goaltending prospects by NHL Central Scouting after going 17-5-2 with a 1.57 goals-against average and .960 save percentage at Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts.

Scouts were impressed after the Marblehead native went 5-0-1 with a 1.71 GAA and .929 save percentage in six games at the World Under-18 Championships.

At 6-2, he needs to grow into his frame, and he'll get the chance next season at Boston College.

An injury to Dan Cloutier during the Western Conference quarterfinals left the Canucks' goaltending situation muddled, with Alex Auld ended up playing ahead of backup Johan Hedberg.

Cheers,
Aquaman

damn you people... nobody responded to my draft thread...

Anyway... Picard has a hot fiancee... they showed her next to him and they also mentioned he's "already engaged to be married". Girl knows where the $ is at. ;)

About Ovechkin...

My cousin played against Crosby a few years ago when he played Bantam AAA. He said he was already a lot better than everyone else.

One of my cousin got invited to the Prince Edwards Island's team (QMJHL) training camp... and they said they are interested in my other cousin (his brother) next year when he's old enough. That's some cool stuff.

Canucks draft goaltender in first round

Canadian Press
6/26/2004

RALEIGH, N.C. (CP) - Top draft pick Cory Schneider brings a string of achievements to the Vancouver Canucks.

The six-foot-two goaltender, selected 26th overall by Vancouver at the NHL draft on Saturday, won the John Carleton trophy awarded by the Boston Bruins to the top student-player in Massachusetts this year.

He won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the under-18 world championships in 2003. And - rare for a goalie - he was captain of his team at the posh Phillips-Andover Academy.

``I'm a big kid so I like to use my size,'' said the well-spoken, red-headed goaltender. ``I go after the puck and let it hit me.

``I watch guys like Andrew Raycroft (of Boston) and Roberto Luongo (of Florida) who are bigger guys.''

He was drafted by Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, but plans to attend Boston College in the fall.

``There was a bit of interest from Rimouski, but I'm looking at Boston College,'' he said. ``Maybe if Vancouver thinks it's in my best interests to do that (go to Rimouski), I'll have to consider it, but right now, I'm planning on going to B.C.''

The Canucks, who need goaltending with Dan Cloutier a restricted free agent and Alex Auld as back-up, may try to move Schneider quickly through their system, although not likely for next season.

``We're pretty thin in net,''' said general manager Dave Nonis. ``This does plug a hole. We don't have the depth at that position that other NHL teams have.''

In 24 high school games this season, Schneider posted a 1.42 goals-against average and a sterling .956 save percentage with six shutouts.

Vancouver didn't have a pick in the second round, but took Swedish defenceman Alexander Edler with the 91st overall pick in the third round. The six-foot-three Edler had three goals and six assists in in 24 games this season.
