NHL '08 or 2k8, which one to buy?

Which one are you buying and why?

I'm leaning towards NHL '08 after playing the demo. I definitely like the feel of the new game, once you get used to it its much smoother than '07 and they have made numerous other improvements to gameplay.

I hate to do this to 2K Sports, but NHL 08 all the way.

I still love my NHL 2K3 though. :p

Best EA hockey game ever IMO. Only complaint I have is I've had a few freezes.....and nothing freezes on my 360. They've even modeled the impact the new rules have on offensive zone flow. That is, teams being able to hold the puck for extended periods of time because the defensive can't interfere or clutch and grab anymore. I think this game is very well done.

I'm with you. I really hate to say it, but I think EA has the better product now. They really took a nice step with 07...and now with 08 I'm in love. If you have any doubts, download the demo for NHL '08.

I played the NHL 08 demo and it was very fun. The skating in it was SO MUCH, I need to emphasize that again - SO MUCH better than in 07. Setting up plays in the offensive zone was fun as well, but I hope the defense is slightly more aggressive in game because at times it seemed like I had a power play going even though it was 5 on 5 (but being able to cycle the puck easily is very nice).

I just wish this was on PC because I love PC mods (realistic arena music, horns, improved arenas, jerseys, etc) but the game is great as is.

haha nice signature Prickly!

You have all confirmed my suspicions (sp?). I think this year was the big year where they did something right and finally overtook 2k in terms of gameplay. Now I can go buy 08 and play hockey this weekend!

I went with 2k7 last year because the 07 demo wasn't enough to give a good impression of the game. It was just a shoot-out. I hope the demo this year is better. I just downloaded it last night but haven't played it yet.

It is a short game like all demos prior to 07 and it plays REALLY well. I've only played the demo...but I like the demo much more than my copy of '07...and I actually liked '07 a good bit (which surprised me as I had switched to the 2k series for quite some time).

Try the demo and let us know of your impressions.

Only had a few minutes to check it out last night, and I couldn't figure out the controls. The screens flashed by so fast I didn't have time to read them. I'll have to try it again.

Pause the game and check the controls out.

Here's some criticisms that I posted elsewhere about 08:

1. Clipping issues. 1-on-1 dekes with sticks going through the defenders bodies. Pucks appearing to be shot into the net though the game recognizes them to be out of the net.

2. Loose pucks situations. If there is a loose puck in front of the goal, instead of the players madly jabbing at it, the attackers slapping towards the goal and the defenders pushing away from the goal, one player magically gains posession and maintains an unrealistic amount of control inbetween 3-4 guys right in front of the blue ice.

3. Shootouts. Maybe it's just me, but I've found a very high percentage method of winning shootouts. Maybe the goalie AI is just bad at stopping this shot but it's really, really high percentage. Not 100% but I can pull it off often enough that even I don't think it's my skill showing, but the game mechanics.

4. Poke checks. Aside from the fact that they should be assigned to the RS without RB as the default, they're annoyingly ineffectual. If you know what you're doing, yes, obviously it works in certain situations. It's pointlessly complicated to both keep your player skating backwards in an orientation that allows you to swipe at the puck with accuracy. You need to hold LT, RB, while moving the LS and RS. This isn't Halo. And even when I hit the puck with a poke check, which happens often enough now that I 'm used to it, the CPU regathers it easily most of the time. It doesn't seem like a huge complaint, but when you start playing a lot, nuances like this are annoying.

5. Team AI. The opponent AI is decent enough, though All-Star difficulty pads their stats rather than increase their ability through more legitimate means. Your team AI is crap. It does none of the things the opponent does, so the player has to switch between all his defenders to always be the one making the play. Your teammates simply don't check or position themselves well.
6. Player switching. As someone else mentioned, there is no last man back button. Switching to the proper defender is sometimes all luck depending if there are 2-3 guys near the opponent puckholder. Very annoying sometimes.

7. Passing. Want to pass to that guy breaking out down the ice? You can't, because your other teammate blocking the path will take the pass. There are no controls to pass to a player farther away if a teammate is in-between. The automation in passing removes a lot of ability for clever passing and can obviously be improved as in the football (soccer to you) games.

Given these glaring issues, 08 is still the better game. ;)

I haven't played an NHL game other than on pc or ps2 until recently. The NHL 08 demo was impressive. I rented 2k8 (was looking for 08 but unavailable) and I do like it as well. Most likely I will buy 08 though just because the controls seem better to me.
