DOVER, N.H.—A New Hampshire high school student shocked so severely in shop class that his heart stopped beating is suing his teacher, the school district and the city of Dover.

Kyle Dubois and his parents claim teacher Thomas Kelley did not warn Dubois and other students of the dangers of the electrical demonstration cords in their electrical trades class.

On March 11, Dubois attached an electrical clamp to one nipple while another student attached another clamp to the other. A third student plugged in the cord.

Dubois was critically injured.

The New Hampshire Union Leader says Dubois' suit contends he suffered permanent brain damage.

Kelley resigned from his teaching position about a month after the incident. He declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Normally I wouldn't say this, but...

shock him again.
Maybe the idiocy will go down by a quantum.

If by high school you don' realize this is stupid, then you might as well sue and win because you know they'll be too dumb to hold down a job later in life

I think they need to prove it wasn't there to begin with.

can you guys really not comprehend real life situations?

some clown kids are screwing around in school. they decide to shock their nipples. considering the lawsuit, maybe the teacher was there and kind of let it happen. kids were expecting a shock, but ended up near dead. yeah, it was a stupid thing to do, but not any worse than some of the comments people on ATOT spew

Yes. Almost killing yourself with a healthy dose of electricity and stupidity is the same as stating one's opinion on a forum on the internet.

I hope the lawsuit gets thrown out and the kids incur the cost of the court's wasted time.

I saw a guy back in high school take a dividing compass and insert it into a receptacle in the school library. The resulting short blacked out half the school and sent the guy flying 5 feet backward.

never bet against stupidity.

I knew of the dangers of electricity when I was in elementary school.

These are the best people to have around when you are about to have a test that you didn't study for.

As dumb as the kids were, why do they have line voltage plug to clamp cables around?

you honestly think a teacher is going to sit there and just watch while someone attached a pair of electrodes across their heart and then plug them in to an electrical outlet.

Heh. During high school I took half-days at the local college for computer science.

I took 2 screw drivers and put them in a power plug and touched them (the melted together, lol). Anyway, a huge clack happened and all the schools internet and clocks turned off. Pretty funny.

However, that kid is a bigger idiot than myself.

I learned about electricity the old fashioned way, by sticking a fork in an outlet at home.

Damn kids these days. :\

Hope when he fried himself it also sterilized him, he's too stupid to be allowed to reproduce. He was 17 or 18 at the time, not even a jerky middle school kid.

1. I hope the court considers that it was reasonable to assume that students are aware not to play with live wires plugged into an outlet.

2. I don't believe the "half my school's power went out" stories. Circuit breakers & fuses are there for a reason. You don't wipe out half of a school, you wipe out one circuit.

Might have been a small school, I put out half my school when I was in elementary school with a paperclip and an eraser (eraser for insulation o_O). It was stupid, but it worked and we got recess for the rest of the day cause the power wasn't working.

In retrospect, obviously a bad idea to even try that, but at least I had the thought of insulation.

If these schools are wired anything like some of the residences and businesses I've seen, one circuit might service half the school. :D

(Well ok, maybe not quite that bad.)

As usual, you place too much faith in infrastructure and assuming that things were done reasonably and sanely. That's not the case in many areas. ;)

Dover is 1 town over from where I live (Portsmouth). I'll see if any of the local papers have anything on this. Would be interesting to learn the theory under which the parents are suing the teacher. From the article, it looks like plain old vanilla negligence.
