NFS:MW - Stuttering on 7800gt!

I installed the Black edition a few days ago. For the first 6-8 hours of gameplay, there were no problems, but now i experience an occasional pause or lag in the game quite frequently. (every 20-40 secs).

The frame rate remains above 30-40 most of the time, but for a brief second, the game pauses, and the fps climbs back up again.

These were the settings I played at initially, and I was getting between 30-75 FPS most of the time using Fraps.
-1280x1024
-4xaa/8xaf
-Vsync -off
-World Detail : highest
-Shadow detail: zero
-road reflection:zero
-car geometry detail:highest
-car reflection detail:highest
-car reflection rate:low
-visual treatment:low
-overbright and rain effect: off

Even after turning off AA and AF, and bumping down details, and the resolution to 1024x768, it still does not go away :disgust: :|

Scanned for viruses/spyware/trojans, defragged the drive, changed drivers to 83.91 (was using 81.98), renamed the NFS music files (as suggested in the tweakguide) etc, but still no improvement.

No problems of any sort with Q4, UT2004 or FarCry. All of those games run smoothly at max settings.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this stutter go away.
See below for system specs

I use FRAPS only occasionally to check frame rates. I dont always load/run it while playing.

Even without FRAPS, the problem still persists.

Is there anyway to backup the saved career mode games? Iam thinking of uninstalling nfs and reinstalling it. But i dont want to lose my saved games. (@ blacklist #11)

Yes,
the saved games are on drive c: under my documents.

Just save the whole NFSMW folder, the re-install the game and copy/paste the one with your save back and overwrite the new one created from your new install.

BTW: Brother had the stutter problem with that game, i edited his registry and turned off motion blur.
That cured his problem.

Thanks for the replies. I tried all the suggestions and nothing works. The game still pauses briefly every few seconds.

Even un/reinstalling did not work.
F*ing EA and their POS games. This is the last NFS I am buying.

Edit: BTW, not a dual core. It is a 3700+ San Diego. Nothing is overclocked.

Did you make sure fastwrites was turned off at the bios level? i had the same exact problem with HL2, turned off fastwrites and it was gone.

If you have a HD activitly LED is it flashing when you get these pauses? I get the same type pauses in certain games and every time I see the LED flashing indicating the hard drive is being accessed. Don't know of a fix for this though if happens to be this in your case.

i get the same thing, it's annoying as hell.

It's because you only have 1gb ram. Newer games are starting to use more than that. It doesn't have enough ram to load all the textures at once, so when you get to a different part of the level, it pauses to load new textures from the hd. Either get more ram, or stop background programs like AV, etc.

Cannot find the option for this. My system is PCI express, so I suppose the fast writes option will be absent. I thought it was only for AGP?

Yes, the HD activity light does blink when i get these pauses. I too think that the pause is due to the game accessing the HD every few seconds.

I have already defragged the disk with Perfectdisk, but it does not help.

Even after I turn the resolution down to 1024x768 and lower ALL image quality settings, the pauses dont go away. So it cant be due to lack of memory.

Also, all unnecessary background processes, programs, AV etc are disabled. No use.

Im going to get the full ver but in the meantime i am playing the demo, this game is sweet.
One question how do you set the game to use 4xaa/8xaf cause in the demo all it has is a slider bar for aa(And no numbers eg. 2,4,8 aa) and right now everything is maxed out.

Okay, i tried increasing the cachesize value in the registry to half of my system RAM, and that does not help either.

There are a couple of registry keys which I dont understand: g_Performancelevel and g_swapsize. Any idea what exactly these values control?

Perhaps your Hard drive is running in PIO mode? Since you mentioned that the HDD light flashes when these pauses occur, perhaps that might be an explanation.
