Well, after researching parts for my sytem for the last few months I chose the MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum as the mobo. The thing is, the DFI is about the same price and it offers better overclocking options. This is my first system build, however, and I'm not sure if I'm going to overclock at all. I want something that will be fairly easy to set up and be stable from the start. Which one would you choose?

I have the DFI board. Set up was easy and had no problems at all. not OC'ing yet, but probably will down the line. Always a good option to have.

Thanks Jerry. Does anyone have any good reasons to go with the DFI other than overclocking options?

I doubt that there are many ppl who have experiences with both boards to give you good opinions between them. All i can say is that I have the DFI and it's been so far so good and i don't have any real complaint.

well, lets see, other the overclockabilty, they're all about the same. dfi uses top of the line parts, to help ensure good oc's. other then that, i'd have to say the board layout is outstanding.

Yes, my MSI K8N K8N platinum was very flaky on reboots. Sometimes if I pressed enter when it hung on reboots, it would continue. Other times it would not post at all, period - typically after removal of a USB device and reinsertion of a different device, or the time that I plugged a different hard drive into my IDE cable from my CD drive to get data off it, it would not reboot.

Bad thing is, it also rarely responded to the Insert key. I had to reach inside the case, press the CMOS Clear button and reset everything from there.

I have tested my 24-hour old DFI replacement board and it does not behave like this! And it has 2 extra usb ports on the back, which is exactly what I needed. AND it has this nice CMOS GENIE thing where you can save different revisions of your BIOS configurations.

I haven't purchased the parts for the new system yet, but i narrowed down my mobo choices to either the K8N NEO4 or the Ultra-D. I'm not sure if I'll get a Winchester or Newcastle, but I dont think overclocking will be a big issue for me as this is my first build and i just want to concentrate on doing it right. Maybe, just maybe, after a few weeks with the system I might try and tweak some settings. I'm just looking for a no hassle board that will allow me to grow along with the system. Tell me if you want the planned configuration (As of now) if that will help as to which mobo to get.

What are you talking about? I've only heard like three people complaining about 2.2GHz with a Winchester core. Yes, some have complained about 2.3 or 2.4, but if your CPU was only at 1.8 when you bought it, you can't complain. I have a recent (2005 week 2) 3200+, and I'm getting 2600MHz with super nice OCZ Gold VX PC400 RAM at 2-2-2-7 with 3.5 vDimm.
I like the DFI motherboard more. It has more OCing options, better parts (capacitatiors especially), looks cool :D, and supports up to 4 vDimm so I don't have to buy a RAMBooster for my VX sticks. Did I metion it looks cool?

I don't think that the A8N-E is available in Canada yet. Anyone know for sure? The list of RAM on dfi-street.com didnt make much sense to me, but I read another thread like that which said that Corsair Value Select RAM fixed all the problems he was having with his setup.

the dfi is really good, if your looking to overclock of not overclock (which you probly not going to) its a really good board. Im pllaning on getting the SLI-DR summer time with the rest of my computer parts. From what ive seen and many other people with dfi's, its a really good board, stability, performance and ocing is what this boards pretty damn good at. So mabe you should consider going for the Dfi. Msi is also good, only like 1-2% less oc'able than the dfi. Performs good at stable speeds also and has some pretty good stability. But for me i would suggest getting the Dfi. :)
