Nforce3 motherboard IDE problems

I have a MSI K8N NEO that I finally got up and running, but I'm having problems with the IDE now. With a single hard drive in the system it seems to run fine. As soon as I add a second hard drive, it seems to work for a few minutes and then Explorer maxes the CPU usage out at 100%. I tried leaving just one hard drive and connecting a cd rom (Lite-ON) and tried installing a application and it starts to install, then the drive spins down and the system locks up.

Is this because I installed the NVIDIA IDE drivers? I know that the Nforce4 motherboards have been reported to have this problem. Is there a way to uninstall the Nforce IDE drives and just go back to using the microsoft ones without reinstalling Windows?

I've tried every combination of drives (Master, Slave, Cable select) and tried different drives, so I know it isn't a hard drive issue. Any ideas?
