Nforce3 Ethernet Drivers & Windows XP Pro Autodetect

Upgraded my MB & CPU last night. Went from a Nforce2 chipset to Nforce3 (XP-M 2.4 to a XP64 3.0).

I installed the Abit driver bundle that comes on the CD...including the Nforce Ethernet drivers.

Everything worked fine, except no ethernet. A question mark appears by the network controller in device manager.

I've "removed" the ethernet controller from the device manager, then refreshed. No go. It keeps saying there is a problem with the installation of this hardware...name or service already exists (or something like that).

I've tried to manually direct the autodetect hardware to the ethernet drivers on the cd. No good, same message.

I removed all instances of Nforce Ethernet from the registry, now it won't let me uninstall. It says that the device may be needed for booting.

Any ideas on how to get this working (outside of a fresh install of XP.)

Thanks in advance.

Many people seem to have this problem with the NIC on the NVIDIA Mobo and end up disabling the on board NIC and putting in a regular PCI NIC.

P.S. if you would like to try more, disable the NIC in the Bios reboot clean the Device manger, and reboot again with the NIC disabled.

Reboot (the third time) enable the NIC and try again.

Doing the above I/e Rebooting with the NIC disabled in BIOS cleans better the Bad installation.
