I haven't been following of the high end computer hardware for a while now, but since my athlon 1.2Ghz based comp just died I've to plan on getting a new one soon. I was planning on getting a Athlon64 3200+ Asus K8V + 2Gb Ram (screw the swap files) + 73Gb Raptor + my current Ati 9600XT. However, I just read about the new nForce3 250 and Socket 939 CPUs, I'm thinking shall I wait for those new components? I mean the current socket 754 cpus are at the end of their line, and the new nForce3 250 promises so many COOL features... This really makes it a HARD for me to choose.

What are the chances for the nForce3 250 + Socket 939 based boards gonna release by end of May? I think I might be able to use my girl friend's comp for another month or so. But if AMD is gonna delay their release of the 939 to end of 04, I''ll be most... PISSED..

Any ideas?

Since no AMD officials post to these boards all you're going to get is speculation. This has been asked a lot the past few weeks and no one really knows. If you need a new comp, don't wait for newer, better hardware because you will never buy a computer that way. If your athlon 1.2 was meeting your needs, you could probably get by spending a couple hundred bucks for the standard NF2 board + barton 2400 - 2600, mobile if you wanna oc, and 512mb pc3200. If you do splurge for the setup you listed, unless you want to oc, you can buy current hardware and it will meet your needs in every way imaginable. If you want to oc and have to have a A64, NF3 250 boards should start showing up in the next few weeks.

EDIT: One thing that has been posted around the web is that AMD's initial release of socket 939 procs will be very limited. What this means isn't known atm though.

nforce3 250 is also being released for Socket 754. You just wont get the additional HT speeds.

I have heard mixed things about what the actual release schedule for 939. Anand and I generally dont recommend sitting around and waiting for the newest hardware always; but what you need TODAY rather than sitting on it. You can get a very reasonable 754 system with a 3200+ that will last you almost as long as the 3500+ on the Socket 939, and you can get it today.

I agree on not sitting around waiting for newer hardwares (that has an uncertian release date). But another fact is my funds for a new system... I probably won't be able to get one in April anyways. I'll just have to wait a little.. maybe even have to wait till May before I can save enough for the system I want. (at least I've to fork up $800+ just for CPU, Mobo, Ram, HD and a Case+PSU) Hopefully, if the 939s are released the 754s are gonna be a bit cheaper. Or if the performance is really outstanding with the 939s, I might save up a bit more and get one of them...
Another trade off with the 939 and 754 systems is that the 754s are pretty much at the end of their line, Which can be both Good and Bad. the Bad is there's no more change to get a CPU upgrade that will make a noticeable difference. The Good is it's STABLE (which is most important to me). Even IF the 939+nforce3 250 is out by beginning of May, i probably won't dash out and get one right away. As we all know 1st revision ALWAYS SUCKS!

Anyways. Thanks for all of you inputs

Realistically - even though it is a nice option to upgrade your CPU in a year or so- how many people actually do it? Maybe its apeice of mind thing..
