I am building a budget system for a friend and wanted to know what would be better in terms of 3D performance... the nforce2 IGP (gforce4mx) VS the KT400/A/600 S3 Graphics UniChrome 2D/3D Graphics...

This is not a gaming system I just want to get the best graphics for the buck... THANKS

Is Quake3/Unreal Tournament (vintage 1999) considered "classic/old skool" gaming yet?

Whatever people say about the integrated GF4MX being "teh suck" you can get very playable framerates in the above games with any AthlonXP processor. (yes even a 1500+ Palomino)

Imho the nforce2 IGP offered the best integrated solution. even if it's just for a word processor/websurfing/email box.

Durr. Even the Intel Extreme can throw down high rates and eyecandy in Q3A - it uses neither pixel nor vertex shaders.

And the nF2 just got bumped for "best IGP" by the R9100IGP Pro. Too bad it's not an AMD chip ... yet. I'd like to see hardware DX9 on-chip ... even 9600 or *gasp* 9600SE/FX5200 level.

You certain about that? Sudhian tested RS350 against RS300 and 875P using a Prescott 2.8 and wren't impressed by it compared to the original the way the review here was. Of course there is still the question of platform driver improvements and wether the new SB will allow for exceptable overclocking result RS300 doesn't. However, no one in the Futuremark database has broken 6000 with a 9100IGP chipset yet and that's with a 3.4ghz P4. Certainly it's a DX8 part where nF2 IGP isn't but since you have to minimize eye candy and res. on many games just to be playable on any IGP the DX8 features don't seem to be a big advantage IMO *correct me if I'm missing something on this point*. Furthermore you can't use a Celeron with RS350 and get the results you get with the 2.8E so you will pay more for a CPU when pairing it with RS350 than Barton mobile and nF2 IGP, and still have to wonder what overclock you can reach for the moment too. That extra cash would pay for an add-in card for a nF2 SPP that would easily outperform any IGP. Compare that to the fact you can spend $77 on a Barton mobile and potentially hit 2.4ghz-2.5ghz 400DC-DDR synch mode, overclock the IGP core speed with coolbits and that the platform drivers are mature and solid and I would say stating the RS350 is the new IGP performance champ is a bit premature. The last match-up I saw of the RS300 vs nF2 had the nF2 still winning the overall performance crown and based on the review at Sudhian it doesn't look like the RS350 at this moment is substantialy faster than RS300. I do believe new drivers and retail boards will show more performance but that would place it approx. on par with nF2 at it's best as oppossed to pushing new heights in IGP performance that overshadow nF2 right now.

Well, okay, so it might not be the "best results" but as far as playability goes in my experiences, it seems to be a head above the nF2. Not head, shoulders, and torso up like those two are above the Intel Extreme OMGITSGRAPHICS chipset though.

Hey, for P4 it's da bomb, no doubt about that!
