nForce2 drivers - question about the release style

Jeff7

How often will nVidia release driver updates oin their site for the nForce2? They've issued two driver updates (at least) since the latest Unified package was released - this was done through Windowsupdate. Is nVidia going to continue doing this? I like being able to download the actual install file to my drive, rather than go through Microsoft's website every time I want to try a different driver version, or go back to a previous one. Anyone know why nVidia's doing things this way?

=> Platform/Nforce drivers
=> Unified Driver Package
=> Four flavors of Windows + one for Linux

Please tell me that you don't rely on Microsoft for all of your drivers. And if you did, you should at least enable the Windows Update Catalog (probably under options), which will then let you download the files to your hard drive for installation at a later date and/or archiving.

Yeah, I know the drivers are there; thing is, the Unified package was released in January - there's been at least two new versions of the audio drivers. The audio driver there is listed as 3.17; the driver files for audio say 5.10.2917.0; I've got 5.10.2934.0 from Microsoft.

And no, I don't rely on them for drivers; I just check there regularly for their Critical and Recommended updates, and sometimes there's been drivers available that are newer than those at the manufacturers' websites. Cmedia is like that - their website lists v639 as the latest drivers (from August last year); Windowsupdate has v643.

I see your point. Nonetheless, anything that is offered on Windows Updates *should* be available in the Windows Update Catalog for direct downloading. Admittedly, the last time I tried to pull down a drive, it only gave me a CAB file. Sure, I could extract the contents and install from an INF, but the process is not nearly as smooth as, say, from an executable.

Ok, I'll give that a try. I guess it isn't in Microsoft's nature to make updating easy, like how to download 40MB of Win98SE updates for someone who's on dialup (I've got cable) - only way seems to be to download each update file (ok, these actually are EXE's) individually through the Update Catalog. It'd be nice if there was some sort of Windowsupdate Exporter, that could sort of set up a mini Windowsupdate interface on a local drive. But I'm just thinking off topic now I guess.🙂
