nForce: which board to choose

I'm putting together an AMD 1800+ machine, and because I'm doing it right now (as in ordering within the next couple of days), I am looking at the nForce because of the integrated video that will tide me over for a few weeks while I await the GF4. Keeping in mind that I'm mainly looking for the most stable board that isn't too expensive (although I am willing to foot the bill for the most expensive if there really is a good reason to) and that I'm not really thinking of overclocking. What nForce motherboard does everyone recommend?

Thanks

If you're not thinking of overclocking, get the MSI K7N420 board. I have one in my secondary rig, and it's stable, fast, and easy to install. Most people here love this board.

Good luck. 🙂

I agree with the earlier suggestions. I built a friend a low budget rig recently using a 1Ghz Duron and an MSI K7N420 Pro MoBo. After installing programs and updating Windows XP we rebooted and it hasn't shut off since. That was over 1.5 months ago! It's been under full load since then as well thanks to Seti@Home.

So IMO, if you don't want to overclock, the MSI board is excellent.

Same as everyone else, except if you're willing to pay more for signifcantly better overclocking, get Asus A7N266-E, but otherwise get K7N420 Pro. One of the best values out there.

Another MSI vote. I've been running one for two+ months now and its rock solid. Just rebooted for the first time prior to writing this to install my new GF3 Ti200.

I got it for the same reason, wanted the good onboard video & sound so I could use my old Radeon 32DDR and Vortex2 soundcard in my older system and have two functional gaming systems while I waited to buy a new video card.

So, any nForce board should be fine to equip with a GeForce4 Ti4400, right? It meets all the required AGP specs, correct?

I?m not sure why nVidia would make their GF4 chipsets incompatible with their motherboard chipsets...otherwise the Ti 4400 should work just fine with a nForce motherboard.

The nForce chipsets are well known to be very stable and many would agree that the chipsets are the most stable solution for an AMD rig. I would certainly jump on a 415D chipset; the onboard video has kept me away due to higher prices and that it also somewhat hampers the chipset's ability to be tweaked.

One thing I'd really like to see in a nForce motherboard would be the ability to raise the fsb of either just the CPU or the CPU and the rest of the system while leaving the ram clocked at a fixed rate. With 4.2 GB/sec out of dual channel DDR, over-clocking the ram really isn?t necessary. But that is just what I would like 😉
