I just built my GF a new pc today using the MSI K7N420 Pro. I also had one a few months ago but never tested it out. I ran HDTach 2.61 and the cpu utilization is 28% (60GXP 40GB) which seems kind of high. I have the 2.2 bios and the latest nforce unified drivers. If you have had a chance to run HDTach, please post some numbers.

I have a Seagate Baracuda IV 40gig and 80gig attached to my nForce. Here are the HDTach 2.61 stats for the 80gig:
Random Access Time: 13.4 ms
Read Burst Speed: 63.1 mbps
Read Speed: 44132 max / 23005 min / 36606 ave
CPU Utilization: 21.8%

I will run this when I get home, at work right now. But my numbers won't help you. I run a total scsi system, so I am not using the onboard controllers.

On my 1600+ with ak31 i got 7.7% with a maxtor +60

It is relative tho, do you have a 1400Mhz cpu in there?

Relatively, it is using 107Mhz to do the test.

On my athlon 850 with k7s5a i got 7.8% with a WD 30bb

Which is 66Mhz of the CPU

Make sure you have all DC projects off, AIM, yada yada

I have a XP1600 @ XP1800 in the nForce rig. I killed all TSR's and still see 25%+ cpu utilization. I will T/S more when I get off work.

Isn't the CPU utilization in HDTach known to be flaky when used with modern CPU's and boards? Thought I remembered seeing that somewhere. See if Iometer reports a different result.

not that i know of (i use a 'newer' system, xp1800, kt266A soyo dragon +, maxtor dx740)

hdtach resports a usage from 5% to 8%...depending....

check if something is running in the background (Taskinfo2000, very good 🙂...because hdtach seems to show the *total* cpu usage at a time and NOT the cpu usage of the hd alone. (If something extensive is running in the background then it happened already hdtach reporting 75% cpu usage which gave me a shock 'til i figured out whats going on)
