Nforce experience

I just built a new computer with the msi k7n420-pro motherboard, along with a athlon xp 1600+, and 2X256 mb ram, wd 60gb hd, pioneer 106s dvd.

It booted up without a problem, and put the fsb at 133 and 266 on the ram. Changed the bios settings to the regular stuff.

Put in a winme bootdisk and tried fdisking.... but it only found 8gb 🙁
I removed the hd and put it in my system, and fdisked there.

Put it back in and formatted it.
Installed winme (the one who are getting this computer wanted that os, so don't say anything about that).

It installed without a problem. Inserted the msi cd and installed the system driver and vga driver (separate), and rebooted. When the system was up again everything was installed perfectly.

It got the ip from my dhcp server and was connected to the net. Downloaded all the things at windows update (and rebooted a few times when it asked for it). Installed paint shop pro, windvd, winzip, acrobat reader, quick time, real player, sisoft sandra, 3dmark2001 etc.
Everything went smooth! And strangly enough the system seems so much faster than the previous system i built (asus a7v-266e +1.33 ghz athlon c, 256 mb ram and geforce 2 pro). I haven't tried any games yet, but will try that tomorrow.

The onboard sound sounds great, the onboard lan works fine (haven't tried it with big file transfers yet), and the onboard vga works as it should.

I get around 950 with the memscore in sisoft sandra (811 (I think)). With auto settings in the bios. Gets 24000 with the harddrive test (western digital 60gb 7200rpm). And around 2000 in 3dmark2001. Unfortunately alittle lower than the regular geforce 2mx400. But this computer will not be used for heavy gaming.

Im alittle dissapointed that the analog audio out wasn't in the pacage (rear l&r +senter&sub), and that it needs to have a separate card to get tv-out and/or dvi. But a sp/dif connector was there, as well as the d-bracket with 2 usb ports.

I haven't tried the usb ports yet, but will try it with a canon n670u scanner and a hp deskjet930 soon.

I will go back to test it more. I will try a few games and some other test programs.

Update: I installed winxp pro now.

I tried to install the 23.11 drivers for the vga, but caused serious instability in winme. The 2d worked fine, but the 3d didn't go at all.

With the winxp it's another story though!

Everything in the installation went smooth here as well.
Installed the 23.11 drivers and the 3dmark and gaming performance went up!

I now get around 2500 in 3dmark 2001 (with default settings in bios)
And colin mcrae rally 2.0 and max payne is alot better. I can use 1024X768 with some details and it goes smooth!

And no stability problems either, Im running rc5 in the background while running the other apps. No crash, bsod or gpf.

Im using a chiftec 300 w psu and a athlon 1600+ with a taisol 760 hsf. The temps are around 36 C idle (with the side door open), and 45 C under load (20 hours on with rc 5 and sisoft burn in test).

Thanks for the heads up... I think my next board will be a nForce in about 6 months when all the bugs are out and the drivers get better...

I have now tested the nforce's usb controller. Have connected a canon n1240u scanner, and it worked great. (I have tried the same scanner on via kt133, kt133a, kt133e, kt266, kt266e and kx133. I had always problems with the sdr chipsets from via. Had to install the usb filter driver, and then all worked.

There was no such problems with the nforce. I think it is a great chipset, and I'm looking forward to get newer drivers that will make this board even faster!
