nForce Driver Instability in Win9x

Just wanted to see if anybody has experienced any nForce driver problems in Win98/Me. I'm using the MSI K7N420 Pro with the nForce 1.24 drivers.

--When installing the MCP ethernet driver, either get an error or windows restarts with no warning. Then windows never enables the device because "the system halted upon installation", and any attempts to reinstall it in device manager have no effect.

--Get similar behavior when installing APU drivers. Sometimes just an error, and the worst case being a bsod. Also a bug in the Audio Control panel will not let you unload a DLS file from memory once it has been selected... only a reboot will reset the DLS cache.

In addition, Win98SE seems to perform worse than WinXP in games; almost as if the drivers are holding it back or somthing. The interesting thing is that WinXP seems to have none of these problems =) Maybe the drivers were designed with more emphasis on WinXP than legacy windows... I personally like to have Win98 to fall back on if XP is having issues.

If anyody has been experiencing these or other problems, please post your comments/resolutions here (although might just have to wait for the updated drivers...supposedly WHQL...)

I won't be ordering my board until tommorow (the joys of being Australian - we get the latest tech way after everbody else), but MSI has newer drivers on their website rev 2.03 for win9x (W9x Driver) and a new BIOS V2.0 (BIOS link)

there is also an updated windows 2K/XP driver (win2K/winXP driver)

Whoa, thank you for the prompt response =)

Um, I have tried the new 2.03 drivers from MSI, and they actually are less stable than the 1.24's (surprisingly)! Also, the bios offered on their site is the initial release that the board had when it was shipped. Dang... tell me if you have any problems too Gstanfor, also, do you use multiple OS's?

And... I say that quote is very true! I trust nVidia to exponentially improve on their drivers, as well as continue to produce fantastic, top-notch products.

As for myself, I'm a dyed in the wool windows 98SE user. I have tried ME, WinXP and Win2K out, but I keep coming back to Win98SE since it does what I want it to, doesn't put on a three ring circus act when you want to do something and doesn't hide options away from you with no good reason.

So I'll be fairly upset if nforce driver problems under Win98 aren't fixed promptly.

How have you configured your DIMM layout? You are supposed to use dimms one and three for best performance - perhaps this is having an effect on your stability?

Greg

Cool, I feel the same way about Win98. Yes! I have my DIMMS in slots 1 and 3 to avoid any performance degredation--even though they are single-sided =)

I was kinda disheartened to see such weird things happening in Win98 right off the bat...

RacerDuke:
Try this win98 fix out (read it @ the MSI forums BTW):

<< managed to get it running under w98SE, just had to kill the digital dolby device under OS to get rid of mpeg3 stuttering and other nasty sound probs. >>
