Nforce boards any good for gaming?

Are the Nforce boards pretty decent for gaming. Looking ot build an inexpensive puter for a friend.

You mean Integrated Video performance? Well, I think that since it's a MX in speed, it should, if at low resolutions, be able to play most games at playable frame rates, if at low resolution.

The performance is really decent. I tried out RTCW on an NForce setup and it ran very nicely. NForce makes a great cheap gaming setup.

I would agree. I rebuilt my second machine a week ago based on the ASUS A7N266-E, and it is a very comparable machine, at resolutions up to 1024X768, with my GeForce3 based main machine. The ASUS one allows you to overclock the builtin graphics card as well, so it is running at 200MHZ versus the 175, and the memory was bumped up 25/50MHZ as well.

If you aren't looking for really high resolutions and don't want to have to buy seperate sound and LAN cards as well, it rocks. My system has one add-on card, the scsi controller for my HD's and CD-RW drive.

it depends on what sort of gamer you are, basically.

For light/infrequent/family gaming, the nforce is pretty much unbeatable. If you are a hardcore gamer though, you may well feel limited by the oboard graphics. Even so, there is nothing to prevent you from upgrading the graphics card to something more your style.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will leave the decision up to them. I was thiking either:

1. Nforce board + ~$150
or
2. Shuttle board plus Geforce 3 Ti200 = $240

Number 2 would beffinitly be my choice but they might not want to spen another $90.

Whoa.... the nForce graphics are not in the same league as a Ti200! If you're only a casual gamer the near-MX400 level of graphics is probably plenty. It's not fair to compare the nForce with that TI200 card - compare it to an MX-400.
Just be sure to use a PAIR of DDR sticks in the nForce or you can compare internal video to an MX-200.
