Nforce 775 780i reaching 4Ghz with a quad?

Hello all. I am helping a friend with an upgrade. He is running these parts:

EVGA 780i SLI EDIT: board does support Yorkfield
DDR2 1066 Corsair

and is interested in upgrading the cpu with the Q9650

He is running 8Gb with his current setup. I am not familiar with this board and how well the 780i chipset can handle a quad say around 450fsb & 8Gb What can he expect with this setup?

His cooling is with an h20 loop.

My eVga 780I SLi did 450+ fsb with a quad. The problem comes with the stock cooling. IMHO, it is inadequate at higher fsb's.

So the NB can get too hot?

Do you remember any of your settings in the bios in regards to the running it stable at 4Ghz? I need a template of some sort. I've never seen an eVga bios before.

no, i don't remember the settings. maybe aigo does, he had more hands on with the evga bios than me. I'm a p45 guy myself.

its been so long since i touched a 780i, i couldnt tell ya where to start without looking at it again.

I have the same motherboard, but with an E8600 @ 4.25 Ghz. As you go higher, you will notice the idle and load temperatures for the NB (using software that will read them) increasing a few degrees C.

The board had been mildly notorious with occasional defective mounts for the heatpipe necklace that cools the NB, SB and Mosfets, and people who had loose-fitting heatpipe assemblies eventually reported NB overheating that led to damage. At room-ambient of between 70F and 80F, I noticed that my idle NB temperatures were between maybe 46C and 52C -- and this was normal. Make sure you either use the accessory 40mm fan-clip that comes with the board, or deploy an equivalent cooling solution.

As far as I could see, Aigo is correct: it is "a cherry."

Thanks for the help guys. I am the friend in question here. As far as the cooling situation goes the NB has a water block on it so that shouldnt be an issue. I am new to the overclocking thing and just want to go a step further

Note that is the 790i with DDR3. New chipset. The 780i is a 680i with an NF200. Not the same. My 680i was notorously hot when overclocking my quad to 400FSB so watch out. It hit 92C on stock cooling and it didn't have an NF200 to cool as well.
