I'm making an AMD 64 system with a 3500+ 90nm. The boards for this chip do not support PCI express.

What are the advatages of new pci express cards over an AGP card? When will PCI Express boards be avalible for socot 939 AMD 64 3500+ 90 nm? Is it worth the wait? I don't upgrade a whole lot, especially if my system does what I need it to from the get go, but thats not to rule it out.

The card I will get other wise is a nForce 6800 GT, for gaming and anything else that might use such card like video editors, photo editors, 3d modelers.

Got any advice for me?

This is my system to be as it stands now:

MSI K8N or EPOX mobo
AMD 64, 939, 3500+ 90nm
2 NEC 3500A
3 Hard drives
1 Floppy
nForce 6800 GT (unless pci express comes out soon)
RME Hammerfall 96/52 (pro audio sound card)
Antec Sonata Case
1-2 Gigs Cosair Value ram
Modem

Thanks

nforce is a motherboard chipset made by nvidia.

You won't be hurt by waiting a few months to get a PCIe board and graphics card. However, a 3500 and an AGP 6800GT will easily last you a year, if not longer. I plan to have my 2.4C and AGP 6800GT until Jan 06.

I think it totally depends on your current system. Are you happy with what you are running now? Can you live with it for a few more monthes? The performace benefits of the PCIe are not that great right now, at least the benchmarks show only minor increases.

You have to decide what you want, fast system right now, or slightly faster system later. This is a question you always face when building a computer. As the technology is always improving, you can always increase your performace by "waiting a few monthes", so the choice is yours.

I plan to get an AGP card now (probably XFX 6800GT) and then get a A64 setup mid next year with an AGP slot. This will mean I cannot use the new nForce4 SLI setup (dual PCIe cards) but I figure an AGP card will last me until I upgrade my mobo again (usually every 1.5 years).

i have exactly the same prob!

They're only just quoting prices on the Abit AX8 mobo which does PCI-e for AMD as far as im aware (in UK anyway). That should be hitting shops in 2-4 weeks. However the problem is the GFX, only 6800 PCI-e i've seen so far is the GTo (350/900 12pipes) for about £250 at

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/...py_of_6800_Series.html

The thing i want is an SLI version otherwise there's no point in going PCI-e, well not yet anyway (think that pic is for ill' purposes only SLI conny 2xDVI??)

How long to wait for a decent SLI 6800 card (350/1000 16 pipes or better)? Only other 1 I've seen is..

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products...sp?WebProductID=131946

but is about £100 more than I really want to spend plus LONG ETA arrgghh

Well if it good 1 aint out b4 Xmas then im gettin AGP and worry about the waste of money later but maybe 2nd gen PCI-e GFX cards will be soooo much better still.....

Either way this POS im sat on HAS TO GO!!!!!!111
