I'm not sure what's going on, but there seems to be some kind of compatibility issue with my computer. My rig is in my signature.
Basically, I was watching a movie and it suddenly froze. I tried to move Media Player Classic but the system basically locked up. I rebooted. I log into Windows, and my sound has died. Certain system sounds would make the computer beep, and launching foobar2000 and trying to play a song would hang the computer.. it wouldn't even tell me "DirectSound create failed" like I cited in this topic.
I install Audigy 2 ZS sound drivers. It uninstalls drivers and reboots. Then it installs drivers and requires a reboot to finish. When you say Yes, the Windows shutdown sound actually plays. Upon reboot, it finished installation. However, it was as if the sound drivers weren't there again. System speaker, no music. I ran the Audigy 2 ZS driver install again, it uninstalled, I rebooted, but this time I didn't reboot a 2nd time. Sound works.
I'm currently afraid to shutdown and experience no sound again, so I was wondering if there was a compatibility problem with my hardware, or if this is a sign of bad or failing hardware. My Windows XP install is practically brand new, as is all the hardware in my computer except my hard drives, disc drives, and Audigy 2 ZS, but I don't think it's the Audigy sound card given the sound does work while my installation is "incomplete".
