Nforce 4---Regular, Ultra or SLI?

BrownEye

Junior Member
I'm planning on getting an Nforce 4 board. Question: Is it worth it to get the SLI boards? I wouldn't use it currently, but may in the future. THoughts?

Also, I saw Newegg carried an Nforce 4 "Ultra". What is the difference between this and the regular boards?

Any thoughts on the best Nforce 4 board to get? I will definately overclock.

Thanks!

blackinches thinks nforce 4 ultra is the way to go. by the time you need the extra horsepower of another video you probably will need a new system anyway. it's kinda hard to say which nforce4 board is good for overclocking since they are so new.

blackinches believes the only difference between an nforce 4 and the ultra version is the sata 2 support and the activearmor firewall.

Go with the Ultra. The feature set is great, and with at least some boards you can mod an Ultra into an SLI board that will perform nearly as well in SLI mode as a native SLI board. That, and the fact that SLI isn't worth it if you have a budget or a wife, should settle the question.

Incidentally, I hope I'm not the only one who thought a conversation between BrownEye and Blackinches would be happening on a VERY different forum....

What if you have both? 😀

I'm teetering between either a 6600GT PCIe + SLI board or a non-SLI + 6800GT. Obviously one will go over more smoothly with the wife than the other. And dropping another $100 or so in a year will be a nice easy upgrade.

I'm going with an Ultra board, a Gigabyte K8NXP-9. It was supposed to be here a week ago but I've been told it should be arriving in the country Wednesday or Thursday, though I wouldn't be suprised if it was set back again. I couldn't be bothered going with an SLI board, if I upgraded to 2 video cards later on then wanted to upgrade again I'd have to sell/get rid of 2 video cards and I'm too lazy to do that 😛

Go with the non SLi 6800GT if you like to play games. Youre not really going to lose much and have everything to gain.

definitely the 6800GT . . . by the time you have to upgrade, geforce 7xxx and radeon XIxxx will be out

You could buy the non-ultra versiona nd flash to the Ultra BIOS.

Its the same mobo footprint.

HTT is limited to 900 as opposed to 1000 but thats not really anydifferenc ein performance at all.
